Sterling trailer axle
So I've been thinking I have this sterling dully axle that has been in my garage a while I have no real use for( it is missin the shafts and internals) so my hamster has been drinking coffee made with monster and has not stopped thinking about making a utility trailer out of it,
Or finding another sterling and making them both into 8lug trailer axles to build a car hauler with I guess my question is what would the theoretical weight rating be assuming the axle remains dully and I remove the center section and sleeve the tubes to make it the width I need?

If the axle is welded all back up correctly then I guess it should be as good as the orgional weight rating of that axle, which could be found on the net.
I did this same thing with a SRW sterling. I gave it a rating of 3K based on the springs. I cut the center section out and used a dana 70 tube to fill the gap. Drilled and tapped the tube for a vent and fill, added about a quart of oil to keep the oil bath bearings. Cut the ends of the shafts off for the end caps on the bearings. |

Have some 14bolt axle tubes I cut off a broken housing and a junk d70 in my back yard. I've been wanting to make a trailer axle for an expedition trailer but have other fires to put out first.

This is why I love this community I would have welded it back together put the trailer tiger load it up and go completely forgetting about having to lube the bearings

I used the sterling also so I could have parking brakes on the "off road" trailer, havent actually put the brakes on yet, just built the trailer and got back to building my rig.

now I cant say if these will put out enough psi or volume for truck brakes, but they do have disc and drum versions for trailers. Thats also the reason I went with the sterling, but again didnt bother with doing anything with the brakes yet.
clicky Tires were just mock up (44x18x15), they are dried out. I built the trailer, pulled a few miles to see how it would ride and parked it. Building my rig to match it still. |

Back in the day they had a bunch of trailers with hydro brakes. Ones I saw had a T at the master on the rear line. How it hooked to the trailer I have no clue.

Yah hydro surge brakes, mc is in the tongue, when the brakes are applied In The tow vehicle, the weight of the boat applies the trailer brakes

couple different ways of getting around that depending on the brake system you have.
basically disable them. |

Both are dully axles if that matters

It's in Randy's differential book.
I guess you wanna know what it's says now? Lol 10.25 Says GAWR 8250, then list a foot note. Foot note says it came in 7400 and 8250 variations in f350. Does not say if the larger is a dually. Also mentions that it came in 250hd trucks. But that the f350 had thicker tubes. Dana 70hd 10k The book is a good buy, any gear head should have one. |

Thanks that will be added to my porcelain throne library.
So 10k on the 70hd Plus 7400 on the sterling 17.4k pound capacity on the trailer I that that will suffice

later k30s with the srw 14 bolt were 10k rated. the only difference was they had overload springs like the drw trucks.
