This Sucks

Yesterday, My PC/HD stopped working. Man, 4 years all locked up in my 80 gig HD. Today, I am running on a back-up HD 5 gig(freebie) and with the OS windowsxp I'm down to 800mb of free space.
All of my pics, over 3000songs, who knows how many movies, My favorites, and most importantly my 1985 FSM are on this HD....I wish I new more on try to to get it working. Looks like it wants to get going. the windows logo is showing getting ready to show the desktop...just before that happens..I get a blue screen for a milisecond and it goes back to rebooting....repeats over and over again. Tried safe mode...Nothing works.
I have a new 80 gig HD just need to set it up. ....Maybe I can set it up for a slave drive. My OS disc is doesn't work now. This Sucks.
Well, I can't say total lost. I new something wan't right. I backed up the main stuff on disc. Just lost my "favorites" my new pics of my Dovetail and halfdoors....and my Dang 85 FSM!!!!
Think I gave away my Org. cd so now my Music is all gone.
Most of all working with 800mb sucks.
Maybe I can copy everything off of this HD onto my new on...OS and all. And put this 5 giger back to sleep until next time.
Mike

it is possible that the failure is not with the actual hard drive. Try booting into safe mode, if it loads, you can assume it was a driver issue. Try this..

begin by installing your new drive in the box as a slave drive... if your drives are jumpered for cable select, the drive at the end of the cable will be your slave.

As soon as you see the "Starting Windows" screen, hit F8 repeatedly. you should get a menu that among other things, will give you the option to load "Safe Mode" and "Last Known Good Configuration".

Try loading the last known good config. If windows loads up, you should start your backups to another location. The system may still require an OS reload at this point though.

If the last known good config doesn't load, then reboot and attempt to load Safe Mode. If this loads, you can assume the issue is with some piece of hardware or with a driver (used to enable the hardware). If you are able to boot into safe mode, then you could begin copying all your data from the old drive to the new one (so you know you have two copies). Then get busy reinstalling windows.

Personally, once the system loaded in safe mode, I would feel confident that I could access the old drive, and would therefore remove it from the system, install windows on the new drive, reinstall the old drive as a slave and then copy over the data I wanted from the old. Then format the old and enjoy the new extra storage.

Did you try booting into safe mode?

Do you have anti-virus software and ad ware detection installed? Was the 80g HDD making any noise? I've been seeing \ hearing a lot of issues similiar to yours in the past 2-3 months. I will bet your HDD is ok, you just have data corruption due to malware. Unfortunately about the only recourse you have if fdisk, format and reinstall if the slave option does not work. You can try to repair using the CD, choosing recovery option.

At least you have backups... 90% never think about a backup until the data is hosed.

Tried the safe mode...No good. Tried last good known config No good.
Tried everything. It keeps rebooting itself. I tried nortons recovery disc...It shows nothing is wrong with the HD. Soemthing isn't right. As for viruses...I did get a few in the last month or so. But was healed. I have a new HD just no OS to get it up and running.
I have Portition Magic CD that I got from My Uncle in N.Y. I'll try to get the 5 gig to my new 80HD. I'm hoping I can copy everything.
$99 for windows xp home edition....will have to wait. I need to go get more Mig wire so I can finish my Half doors.
Mike
If anyone in SA would like to look at it. Let me know...I would rather have A idea on price before fixing if fixable.
The HD is sitting here...Seagate

Set it up as a slave drive and see if you can see the data on it.

Rastus, I haven't got around to it yet...But that is a idea. It was configured as a slave drive...not knowing what I was doing at the time.LOL
I just haven't got the time. Today I want to finish my half doors....But, I still need a main drive. This 5gig is almost to it's max. My new HD needs a OS cd to set up for main drive.
I was just blowing off some steem.
And I was running AVG for anti virus.

My lap top started doing that a while back. When I took it in they told me I had a key stuck on my key board.

Mike, no computer is safe. With adware, trojans, worms etc so prolific on the web today the only way to be secure is to not get online.

Now since we all get online everyday, there are things we can do to assist in protecting your system. If you are running windows XP make sure the firewall is turned on. Keep your anti-virus up to date, Get a good adware program, Ad Aware is good for this as is spybot. If you are using a different OS then invest in a firewall program, Some that come to mind are Blackice, ZoneAlarm, and McAffee. NEVER ever open email attachments unless you know the sender and have ran a scan on it first. Best bet, just don't open them. If you have family or friends that sends attachments back and forth, use winzip to create the attachment and use a password when zipping the file. Winrar is good as well if you don't like winzip. Download the MS Defender program from MS, it works pretty good for spyware and it's free. Set your virus scans to run daily, pick a time when no one will be using the system and configure it to run at that time. Same with the Ad Ware programs. Yup, this is all a PIA but it beats the hell out of losing data and or having to rebuild your system.

#1 rule... backup your system.

Or you could be like me and just use a pos os that no one will even bother making a virus for. About the only thing Millenium is good for.

fixed

Problem fixed I think(fingers crossed). I ran my old HD as a slave(which was set up that way to begin with) with my 5 giger. The 5 giger somehow fixed the slave drive. Was missing some fills and what not. Anyway, I disco. the 5 giger and running on my slave...the way it was before. I still have my new HD just no OS to set it up at this time. I know I can transfer my slave drive stuff to the new one. Just don't want to transfer the problems it had in the pass.(viruses). Rather start new with the new one.
Thanks to all for your input. Need to get blank cdrw to back up the other half up my stuff.
Running virus scan as I type.
Mike
