Trailering Question.

I have been doing some looking but the Texas law, but is to hard to read. I think I read somewhere that if my load is more than 26K I need to have a CDL?

What I plan on doing it is buying a new 1ton DRW truck, a 31+5 goose neck trailer, and pulling my pop-up camper behind that.

My question is what do I weigh?
1. do I add in the weight of the truck + goose neck weight with two rigs+ weight pop-up camp?

2. Do I only add in the weight of the stuff I'm hauling?

This past Christmas I bought my wife a rig, so now I need a longer trailer to pull both rigs. We also got a pop-up camper to stay in on those long cold or hot weekends. Now I just trying to figger out the best way to get my toys to the park. The only thing I have found out is I can not be over 65ft long.

I don't know for sure because I haven't weigh anything, but here are some numbers that come to my head.
Toyota= 4,000#
Blazer= 6,000#
Pop-up= 3,200#
Goose neck= 6,000#
Truck DRW= ?#

This is what I heard from a DPS officer when I called.

1) Take the total Gross Hauling Weight of Truck (Located on driver side door).

add

2) The Total Gross Hauling Weight of Trailer (Located on neck of trailer)

If both add up to more than 25999, then yes you need a CDL, otherwise you are okay.

Don't quote me on this, but that is what I understand it to be.

If your total weight (including truck, trailer, load, etc) is over 26k you will need a CDL. I believe that is fed. law. Also, some places you need a tandem endorsement to pull two trailers and the first trailer must be a goose or fw (which you will have). From what I have heard, that one varies from state to state.

A dodge QC dually should weigh around 8k.

I have also heard that you have to have a CDL to pull a dual wheel trailer now. I dont know if that is true or not.

I would expect to be holding the dumb end of the measureing tape for the DPS from time to time.
I dont know how long your pop-up is or the toung length on either trailer, but with a 4 door fatty cab, your gonna be pushing that over length law.

Get your gooseneck DOT inspected...that'll help a little when it comes time for the ticket book.

This is correct, if combined GVWR is 26k or over you are required to have a CDL

Also, if you are close to the 63- 65' total length go ahead and plan on being stopped

Also I think 6000 is a little light for the 31+5 trailer. My 24' flat deck is right at 5000pds. Get big tex to give you the weight on one.

I went down to the DPS and talked to them before I got my truck and trailer.

It is realy a messed up deal how they qualify the need for a CDL.
As long as the truck you are driving does not have over a 26,100 GVWR you do not need a CDL. You can tow any trailer you want as long and the trailer is rated under 25,000 GVWR. (fed law)
Now here is the tricky part. The GVWR tags on the truck and trailer don't mean squat as long as there under 26,100 and 25,000. They add up the total wieght carrying capacity of the tires to determin the amount of weight you can carry on those tires.(truck, trailer, and load) Yet without a CDL the total combined weight of the truck, trailer, and load can not exceed 26,100 lbs.. Now if you have farm tags that weight amount jumps to 33,000 lbs.(just a little something they don't want people to know about.)

Tweeder just gettin started
I dont know if PEAKABOO has a CDL or not...but he has pulled (2) rigs on his gooseneck and his pop-up behind. I dont recall him haveing any troubles. I wouldnt think the 5-0 would nit-pick that bad...especially if you've got 2 rockcrawlers up there...i would imagine they'd be droolin, wishin they could go.....OR..it could be a complete 180 and them wanting to be pricks..

yeah, i know i didnt give any helpful info...

My 30+5 weighs 7000 empty. When I got stopped I found out that its the weight rating on the tag on the trailer plus the weight of the truck. My trailer is rated at 20,000 and my truck weighs 11,000,so I need a CDL.

One thing you could do that would cut down on some trailer weight is eliminate the deck in the middle if you dont need it and maybe use some lighter material for the remaining decking.

Do NOT get your trailer dot inspected.... If you do only a dot inspected truck can pull it.

& you must have a CDL to drive it.

Thanks for the help guys.
Thanks for that bet of info. snick, I will ask about that because I run farm tags.
When I made this post I had forgot that I just hired an exDPS officer, so I called him at work today. He called a friend that is DOT and gave me the bad news.
Midnight Crawler and Rvreddog have the right answer. If all three of my tags add up over 26,000 I need a CDL to be driving this set up.
To clear this up some, if the truck I buy has a GVRW of 8,000# and a trailer that has a GVRW tag of 20,000# and I pulled it empty (I mean nothing on the trailer) I would need a CDL.

Something I would like to point out is both Snick and I talked to DPS people and got different storys. And Rvreddog got pulled over and was told the samething as me. I think most of the time I will be fine and never get pulled over, I'm just worry about the new guy that love writing tickets and trying to understand the law.

Somebody also told me I could get the place I buy the trailer from to put a lower GVWR rating on the trailer, but before I do that I need to find out what would be the cheapest ticket. Not having a CDL or being over weight on my trailer. I might be able to say I added the 10K axles after I bought and just didn't know I need to get a GVWR tag.

Thanks for the in put guys!

If you get the lower rating put on the trailer they may write you the same tickets and let you prove in court that you are right. Its the dual tandem,or triple axle that gets there attention, ecspesially with a dually tow rig.

Farm Tags are a dangerous route. If caught, the fine can be very high and they will take away the right to have them all together IIRC. That being said, I have them on my trailer.

yep, one of the guys from Houston I think was on his way to Las Cruces and got pulled over because he had farm tags. I would not do the Farm tag route, MG

Why not just get your basic CDL,have everything tagged with the correct weight rating & everything will be A-OK. You can try to bend the law however way you want, but in the end the HY ptrl & judge have the final say.

That is what I am going to do. I don't know about texas but in Oklahoma they will nail you with farm truck tags if you are pulling something that is not farm related. meaning you can not drag any kind of recreation vehicle. such as a boat, jet skis, travel trailer, atvs. anything like that.

we just bought an old 32 ft triple axle. I think what will save me is it has 5k axles under it. so it is a 15k trailer and my dually says its 10,500. so that puts me at 25,500. alos it is so old and been reapinted so many times the traier has no tag on it. I'm sure when I get pulled over that will have the DPS mad and give them reason to hassel me over everything

My wife has the Toyota farm tagged already. It is the truck she used to check the fences and live stock with. I think if we make any trips anywhere we will be going to "look at snick's land so we can buy it". Plus I am buy the trailer for my farm. I need it for the tractor and the hay I buy every year.
Somebody help me here, but I thought you had to use your equipment 51% of the time to have farm tags on it.

Thanks for the info. I'll let Tab know what y'all have said.

Just remember.

"No officer it is not a toy or what ever you want to call it, it is farm/ranch equipment. I use it for getting around my property."

And this.

" I was taking it to this destination (( insert on of these here, to have it worked on, to try and sell it, to let a fellow farm/ranch friend use it to get some where on his place he dosen't want to or can't get his mode of transportation into, ect ect. )). You can be creative on that on as long as it seems fiesable.

Now just make sure you actualy own some property this won't fly at all if you live in the city. lol

I only use farm tags on my trailers because I do hual quite a bit of farm/ranch stuff.

Hey on the farm tag stuff I will check at work tomorrow for you -- I load 18 wheelers with Ag liquid Fertilizer -- all farmers with farm tags -- I will see what the do's and dont's are for you

As for the CDL -- yes get it -- it would be alot better on you than to jack with the cops about all of it. My boyfriend (Dan) is a truck driver -- he said that he would not really worry about the weight issue cause you dont have to go over any scales to start with -- but it is not a bad idea to know what the law reads. Check a CDL driver's test book -- they might have all the information you are looking for in there -- I think they are free at the DMV. Hope this helps..
