trailers and titles

If I buy a gooseneck trailer and it doesn`t come with a title, how much greif will I be in for?I know that the weight rating on the trailer puts it in the category of needing a title.Shop built title?

U have to go get it inspected and titled. U will need to get it weighed at a certified scale and get the slip.

Run the vin first, if it has one.

Agree with the above. I did this recently, but mine was an old trailer and the title had been lost. It did have a vin welded in the frame on the rear rail of the trailer. The inspection is to search for a vin and to see if it is stolen. It is not for road worthiness. If they find a vin and it is stolen, they will take the trailer initially and then you have to prove that you bought it legitimately and you may or may not get to keep it. That is the big risk. If you are sure there is not vin then you have to apply for one I believe and it is a process as well.

This also depends on if you are doing farm or standard registration. I was doing the standard and it was farm before that. For farm you dont need a title or a vin.

They are getting strict on trailers. Best go in and talk to someone about what to do. It took me 3 or 4 trips down there to finally get it just like they wanted it. PITA, but finally have a legal, registered, titled trailer in my name.

If theres no vin. "Search really good on frame rails and tounge."
Then title it as a "home built" and weigh it and then DOT inspection. And your good.
Done this to my last 2 trailers no problems.

What about pickup bed trailers? Homebuilt? I know there is no vin, and I surrendered the titles when I took the cabs to the scrap yard.

It's rather easy. You can go to a regional dos office or to an auto theft task force and have it inspected. Like above, they will ask for a weigh slip. They'll give you a paper certifying the trailer and you can either take it to your local tag office or regional tx dot office to have a title issued. If you go to a large regional office the not only k ow what they are doing but can also print a title on the spot.

carring capacity makes all the difference. Yes you could title any trailer as home made, till someone runs the numbers and realizes you have a 14K trailer titled as one hauling only 2K.

So the fact the OP started off saying a gooseneck means he will need a title.

Just because its a gooseneck doesnt mean it needs a title. I keep all my trailers at 4k and below. You don't need a title. Now obviously this is if it doesn't already have a vin.

So I can put a goose neck on my pickup bed trailer and haul 14k pounds with it?
Heck yeah, that's gonna come in handy!

I bet you find a vin. Then you will get to play the DOT games.
Be sure you get a bill of sale and the sellers information.

I will move to Arkansas when the liberals and "ethnic minorities" take over Texas.

So maybe we can meet up in a couple of years.

I talked to the local tag office today and it sounded pretty easy and straight forward. Then I talked to the local DOT office and I`m thinking about going to a foreign country and hiding out awhile.

i'm in a similar situation as well... but i have the title to my trailer...

but i bought the trailer from guy A, who bought it from guy B, who bought it from C. Guy C bought it brand new... but no one has ever transfer title since guy C purchased the trailer in 1996.

whats the easiest way to get this put in my name? or at least registered and legal.
