Video editing/transferral...

Couple summers ago I sprung for a high-dollar Sony hi-8 digital video camera. It was right before the DVD ones came out, so I got it was a great deal and can't complain about it a bit. Only trouble is everytime I've tried to use the digital hookup to transfer my movies over to the computer, it's sucked. I've got twice as much computer as the camera says it needs, got everything setup and installed correctly, and have been nothing but disappointed. The Sony software is truely crappy, but it's the only thing that'll link the camera to the computer.

So, I'm gonna go the other direction, and use one of the boxes with RCA hookups unless someone knows a better way? Any experience with these things? Software to look that'll make transfer easy yet still be functional? Other things to consider?

I'm not wanting to do anything fancy... not even wanting to burn the videos to DVD. Just originally had planned to archive the "good" parts of the video I shot onto CD's so they'll fit in my safety deposit box.

I cant help you there. I've tried getting mine onto my computer (non digital) by using the inputs on my computer, but everytime I try to transfer the program just locks up. I've tried a couple different programs and get the same thing.

Weeelll... I dunno if it's firewire or not. It's got one that I know is for the RCA connectors (female stereo plug thingee), one that is the USB, and another one that just says "A/V, what looks like an 'i' with a circle at the bottom and DV". It is a shorter rectangle with a cut in at one side (never have looked at a firewire connection, so I couldn't tell ya). As far as I know I don't have a firewire connection on my computer either.

I have successfully played back video through the USB port, as well as transfer pics off the memory card this way, but havn't ever been able to record anything. It has a menu tab on the touch screen to "Burn VCD" but I don't have a clue how to activate it. Its always darkened out like an unclickable link.

DVR stand alone unit that records like a VCR but you use DVDWR instead. I hook up my camcorder to it and that is what I have. 89 bucks at circuit city..I have a high 8mmJVC camcorder and it works great. You can spring for a better one. I tried the pc version and hated it like you.
Mike
I haven't tried D.L. to my pc yet but it records and you can play the dvd on almost any dvd player. I have a dvd in my pc and it works great.

Sounds like it has a firewire connection (the small rectangle - smaller than the USB) you can get a firewire card from any # of places. Transfer rate is much higher than USB. Though even with USB you should still be able to DL the movies toyour system. What is the model# on your camera so we can look it up?

DCR-TRV460 is the model number... I've dug everything out of the Sony site that I can here: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/mod...?mdl=DCRTRV460

I try to get a firewire card later today. kids are out of school at noon today so it sounds like a good excuse to go parts shopping.

I've almost always got this thing strapped around my neck, and have close to 50 tapes filled with mostly garbage. There's a few good things in there, my boy's first soccer goal, my daughter's birthday parties, kids riding their bikes, and just special family events. it's a pain watching through a 45 minute video just to find a little section that makes me laugh. *shrug* not to mention these things get expensive!

Did not see a Firewire connection on your camera.. USB will be your best bet.. unless you want to spend $$ and get a high end video capture card.

I use the Video toaster card to do all my capture with on the VHS camcorder, the other camera has a firewire connection.

alrighty... got a 4-port firewire card. it claims it is also compatible with the Sony i-Link (the weird little "i" with a circle symbol), which on closer inspection is a 4 pin firewire jack. now I just gotta find that little cord... it's been in the camera bag in the same spot since new, and wouldn't ya know it? can't find it now... I'm gonna dig up that cord and hook all this mess up and see if it'll work a little better...

Yeehah! figured it out.

I'm taking the previously mentioned firewire card back to Best Buy and get my $40 back. Went to Office Depot (closer than best buy) to get a new DV cord and the cheapest they had was $31. Local isn't the way to go on this one.

Shopped around on ebay and found a card, cord, and software for 99 cents (of course another 11 or so shipping). So for $12.98 total I got everything I needed. Package showed up today in the mail, hooked up the card and camera, installed the software and had my first vid made within 20 minutes. Couldn't get much better than that.

Now then, how do you get the MB count down to a reasonable amount and still get fairly good quality vids? I'm hoping to take 1-5 minute vids and save them to CD's, and would like to get as many "clips" as possible on each CD.

Your editing software should have a "save as" or "export" feature. I usually export as MpegII. Seems to shrink it pretty well and resolution is just on the edge of getting fuzzy.

CD's are cheap.

Keep the video quality high for archives, cause you never know when you might need a high quality video.

Yep, good idea. Usually you can export a duplicate file of lesser quality and not affect the original.

So, basically I should go ahead and save the file at high resolution, large file size onto my CD's and then just re-edit the clip again to make it more manageable if I ever use it in the future? Makes sense... how much can I fit on a CD?
