Website desing / maintenance

A friend of mine that owns a local shop here in town got tired of his crappy website that he made a few years back and decided he wanted something better and new. So he found a company that make websites and paid them to build the website. They did a great job and did most of what he wanted. But the problem he has now is the people that set it up dont know anything about 4wd or automotive stuff so a lot of it is just worded wrong or set up wrong. He doesnt have time to get the training to add new stuff and edit thing on the site. So I told him that I would call the company and get the training and I would get the site set up for him and update with new stuff whenever he gets it. This was a couple weeks back I started the training with the people that built the site and since then I only have about 8 hours or so in it but I will be getting lots more. The guy that owns the site basically asked me today how much do I want to be paid to run the website and I really have no idea how much it is worth. I do know he paid that company about $5K to set up the website. From what I have asked around so far is seems that most people that do this charge $40-$80 a hour. I cant charge that much. For one he hooks me up with parts for REALLY close to cost. And if I really start doing the site then he will sell the parts at cost. ALso he lets me bring my truck up there and work on it just about any time I want. That includes using his , cutting torch, plasma cutter, tube bender, 2-post lift, and just about anything else in there.

I know that to him me doing the website is worth a lot more to him then him just letting me use the shop. But to me that is a big deal because I cant do a lot of what I do on the truck with out the shop tools. But at the same time most of the major fab stuff on the truck is done so I really shouldnt be needing to shop much anymore. Basically what I am asking is if you had to put a price per hour on the something like that what would you say it is worth?

Here is the website. It is not dial up friendly but he didnt care.

Nice website, We charge like $90 but if you think 40-80 is too much what about $25. I also trade services with other people so you may consider that as an option. You do some work, he gives you some parts. As long as both of you feel your getting a good deal, all should be good. Talk to him about it, see what he thinks is fair.

Pretty good friend. I have known his a couple years. If I down in the dumps and needed to talk to someone I wouldnt call him or if I just needed a hand with something I wouldnt call him because it to busy with his own stuff. We go wheeling together and when he actually works on his rig I am usually helping. Like the roll cage for instance I bent 90% of the tubing on it. But most or the work he has his employees do. Also when I do go up there and use the shop he doesnt ever help me. Another guy that works up there that I go wheeling with and am friends with usually helps(supervises) me. Most of the time I work on it by myself but I dont have a key to the place so I have to have someone else there. I am thinking about just saying give me a key to the place so I can go up there and use the shop anytime and we will call it even.

Looks like most of the content will stay pretty static once you get the pages updated how he wants. Once you learn the content management system pushing the site, it will not take you very long to update. I would say if you are not constantly adding/updating pages or running daily promos on the front page, the use of the shop should more than cover it.

sounds like your getting a pretty good deal, unless there ends up being alot of work on the site I'd just call it even.
