Wink [Friendly Rant] 4x4 TV shows

The new "Extreme 4x4" show on Spike just burns my biscuits and I am working hard to figure out why. I think I was too excited about it and it can't possibly meet my expectations. It could be any of the following:

1. I appreciate the effort of having the female host, and she probably is a better fabber than I am, but if we're going to have eye candy to draw a male audience (who else is going to be watching anyway?), then I want to see Pamela Anderson [insert other hot chick of your choice here] etc. with a plasma cutter and in an outfit that requires glue to keep it on. I mean, if we are going to be "extreme" here, then no half measures I say. I want Full-On Hotness. "Let me help you with that"

2. The male host annoys me. I don't know why. I think maybe it's because my Texas instincts tell me he's a Canuck. Who else says "aboot"? Also, he doesn't seem to sweat when working, which creeps me out. When I'm in the garage, I'm filthy. You come back in the house after being in the garage 4 hours and you are not sweaty, that just tips the wife off that you've been out there drinking and listening to the radio. Plus, he's never slapped his co-host on the *** even once. Sexist and neanderthal, yes. But, remember I am the intended male audience so I get to say what's appropriate. Ok fine, if you can't do that, at least have a together at the end of each episode or have her smoke a cigar . . .

3. The show is not that "extreme." Bolting on a Kelderman Air Ride suspension system onto a Dodge is not extreme. It's just expensive. v8 swap into a jeep, again, been done many a many a time. Want to impress me? Let me see you swap a Cummins into that jeep . . .

4. Dumb build decisions. Okay, the most interesting project in terms of real fabwork is this Ranger they are building up. It's a junkyard single-cab. One of the 'extreme' decisions they made is they are going to make it an extended cab. This is annoying because no real world wheeler is going to do that. He'd just source an extended cab to begin with and put that money and fab time toward something more important. So, that portion of the build is just goofy and, therefore, annoying.

5. Unlimited budgets. I'll be fair and say this chaps my *** on all the shows (HP TV, Trucks!, etc.). I know the show's advertisers require all of them to shill parts. I'm okay with that. But, take the Jeep "build" on Extreme: All they did was order $15k worth of new crap and bolt it on. Or, the Dodge: "Oooh, let's have Banks come in here and make a "guest appearance" [i.e. pimp his stuff] with $10k worth of his bolt-on diesel mods and then dedicate the rest of the episode to worshipping him. Or, having the HP TV guys build up a $10k Ford small block for the Ranger. How does that help an average guy? We all know we can do that as soon as we stop wasting money on food and lights and stuff. Plus, none of them hardly ever tell you what kind of bucks you can expect to invest, even a ballpark, on any given mod. One exception seems to be the HP TV guys, I hear them mention prices pretty often. It's easy to have "extreme" builds when JEG'S, Summit, Skyjacker, TCI, etc. etc. etc. is hooking you up like some sort of mad crack dealer having a Blue Light Special sale. What can you do with your two hands, a BFH, a $150 Lincoln 110V stick , a junkyard and $300? Show me that.

6. NASCAR shop toys. Wowee Mom, can I have a hydraulic mandrel tube bender for Christmas along with a professional milling machine and notcher? No? Well how am I supposed to bend this tube up? I want to see guys with a drill, a cheap , a big-*** hammer, 4 or 5 floor jacks that look like they came from a mud pit, a sawzall and a pair of pliers go to work! Real "extreme" fabbers improvise, adapt and overcome their pitiful middle-class equipment and fab up sweet hardware with skill, luck, effort, and a lot of cussing. Oh yeah, you guys have $50k in shop tools, but can't manage a $100 bar 'fridge holding a few cans of Coors? WTF

7. The dude with the mullet [Stacy on Trucks!] is building a Power Wagon on Rockies with 49's. Top that.

This rant has been brought to you by the letter "X" and the number 2. Remember, all your donations go toward supporting my wheeling. We now return you to "When Suzukis Go Mad"

X that chick is hot! Anyway why did you think a TV show on Spike would be out there doing anything other than selling car parts? It is what it is. I thought it was funny when they took that dodge "offroad"

Go to there web site and say the same stuff. It would be all to funny to read.

Well, alot of what you posted is politic fault. The slapping ***, drinking on tv, need less clothes(if you want it real you would have her wear the clothes she wear due to her working on the trucks) and lighting a cigar is a BIG no-no. Which is cool with me i see that in real life i don't mind not seeing it on tv. Plus my 15 yr old cousin watch this show, so all that won't be nice. Don't forget my 2 yr old when she is with me we watch those show, mom had to call me to find out what channel is horsepowertv comes on cause marie(2yr) was wanting to watch fast cars!

As about all of the high dollars parts you said you liked trucks! hell i watch them all come sat and sun incase i missed the detail. Those sergant rock axles are not cheap! all of his parts are high dollars too. all of those fabrication on trucks is cool but extreme does some fab too, watch it alittle closer.

Now about the tube cage tools you don't have to have those tools, hell he even said there are other ways to do the job but harder. also someone in the area has a tube bender that they will allow you to bend afew bends. notchers? angle grinder and patience, hell some of us don't have that but we find way to get it done like give some to a buddy to weld(best to give after welding!)

All of these shows are not really what we can do but they get the creative flow going for me. i get ideas from these shows and then i adapt them to my rigs when i have the money and time to do it. stroking motors are not really that big of a deal, there are good companies that sell their parts cheaper. but just for building on tv why not going the Extreme and build it to a high dollar motor. Personally i would like them to do the junkyard motors that hot rod had features afew yrs ago, always wanted to watch that on tv!
Also half of that money goes into dressing up that motor so if you use regualar tin and paint it you could have a sleeper which is my next goal.

And also don't go dissing my girl she is the kind of gal i dream about!! someone who would even hangout with me in the shop and hand me the right tools and help hold something while i weld is my ideal girl. but i am just looking for a gal who supports my hobby.
Now that i am finish i am going to the can and taking my hotrod magazine with all of their high dollars projects to get more ideas for the future! Best place to think too!!

Oh and here is a X i just figured i would point this stuff out to other readign this!!

i guess its the producer/writer or somthing but he comes on jeeps-offroad.com and asks us what we would like to see on the show, he asks us what we think of the show, and other stuff like that. i pretty much like the off-road shows because i like anything off-road not whats going on in the show

The Dodge build on X4x4 was a waste of time. Stacy already does a show on building TRUCKS.

I agree with most of your ideas here. Mostly I agree that this new show falls waaaaay short of what it could have should have been.

Talking

LOL. Thanks Zero, you are the Dean Martin of TX4x4--cool at all times. (I'm overlooking the fact Deano was more of a Scotch man than 'Dew freak).

Okay, maybe I was a little hard on the female co-host. I recognize some of my Steel Brothers here on TX4x4 are of the purer faith, and the plasma cutter in the hand of *any* female is what turns them on . . Couldn't we compromise and she welds in a tube-top? That seems eminently reasonable to me. If she sparks up, the co-host can pat her out, right?

Cody, you put a lot more thought in your reply than I did my rant. Rock on, bro.

"Extreme" in my mind is when you end up with some of the sweet rigs our members have, when what they started with and their tools and materials looked like somthing the "Junkyard Wars" competitors said, "Oh, hey man, no way we can work with that crap."

Also "extreme" are the Road Warrior guys like ACProKeith. They are scary. Their rigs are scary. What they do with their rigs are scary.

Well, to be honest, I would also probably consider "extreme" any build-thrash weekend with Midnight 4W. That's the kind of deal I think you wouldn't want to be the first guy to fall asleep at...

If you recall, when they began advertising Xtreme4x4 TV they said it was for Xtreme 4x4's. I ain't seen one ( or heard of one) on there yet. When they did the resume search, the requirements listed were fabrication skills, building something from nothing type of work - like rebuilding coil-overs or regearing a rig on the trail blindfolded kinda stuff. Chassis building, Rock Crawling, Mud Racing, in our face Xtreme that will be on the cutting edge of the sport.

Boy!! talk about what they DO NOT do. I don't call having another show building a street racer motor for a 4x4 very in house.. Buying parts to bolt on a jeep...what kinda fab work does that entail???

that non-Xtreme4x4 TV show if for them city geeks, who surf the net and never get outside, and thing missing the floor on the elevator is Xtreme...the smurfs are more xtreme than that stupid show

Wanna See Xtreme, come wheel with the Midnighters when we get Rowdy!!

what pissed me off and kinda turned me off the show a lil (yes i still watch ocasionally) is when they did the "budget" CJ and told people that for a spring over all they had to do was spend 50 bucks on perches weld them on and theyre ready to go....

no mention of brake lines, steering geometery or axle wrap.

We seem to have a consensus.

Back on topic, I think you could do a great episode or series of episodes on extraction, winching techniques and trail repair alone. Remember 4 or 5 guys jumping in and wrenching on Benji's trashed caliper and rotor by flashlight at Barnwell? Now that's the real deal. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad it's not all moon-buggy-clone worship on the show, but Rastus is right; *teach* me something other than big bucks buys good parts.

Maybe I should just bring a video camera to Katemcy in June...

Anyone watch this weekend?

The canuk talked about rebuilding an automatic tranny and showed rebuilding a TF999. "You could save as much as $1000 doing it yourself."

And the girl rebuilt a Dana 300, adding a 4:1 kit.

They had highlights from the competition at that "no normal person would ever try this" park in Ohio (I think that's it's location). While interviewing "the man to beat" I kept thinking about the movie "Deliverance."

This show is gradually getting better. I guess the comp highlights fit the name "Extreme4x4" but I'd rather see more fab and rebuild stuff.

Stacey's 4x4 projects on Trucks! have been better than most of what I've seen so far on Extreme.
