Question 4l80e shifting options

Might be putting the 383 in the maroon truck (98 k2500) for the time being. It will not have fuel injection on it because my heads arent compatible with the efi on the truck, and even if they were... the engine is too much to tune with that style efi.

I have heard there is a stand alone computer that came on some of the deisel pickups back in the day that doesnt have any engine input. Do yall know anything about this?

And option number two is full manual valve body. They are cheap and need no engine input to shift. My only problem (probably easily answerable with a call to jegs)... how to get the converter to lock up? On dodges you can put a switch in to ground some pin and it will lock the converter. I have never seen this done on a chevy.

The stand alone comp will be from the early 90's.

I did a quick google search for other options and there appears to be quite a few..

Would like to keep it on the rather cheap end of things. A stand alone harness is like 650 bucks from jegs. I just listed the two cheapest routes i had found and the questions i had.

Factory Stand Alone controller for 4L80E
I havent found much info on making the stock controller work behind a diesel although alot of people have started threads on it, nothing has come of any of them I can find. I understand you need a tps, vss and maybe an rpm sensor as well as a modded stock wiring harness. The tcm from a 91-93 diesel powered chevy truck should work or from a 94-95 diesel powered chevy van. Be warned this is not the best computer or even the cheapest after its all said and done, the shift points wont be optimized for your setup as well as converter lockup. A custom eprom may have to be burned adding more expense and trouble.

Aftermarket controllers

Baumann TCS
Baumann Electronic Controls cheapest and simple to program seems to be lots of happy customers

PCS controller
Powertrain Control Solutions - Engineering the future of driveline control moderately priced with the most options and features has a very good reputation for a high quality product

TCI
http://www.tciauto.com/Products/Electronics/default.asp Basicly a rebadged pcs controller TCI has terrible customer service

Compushift
http://www.hgmelectronics.com/products/compushift
A very popular trans controller but by far the most expensive of the group known for ease of use and reliability

Trans Go manual shift kit
http://www.transgo.com/rpg_generalmtr.php This is a shift kit that installs inside the valve body to turn the 4l80e trans into a purely mechanicle trans that requires NO computer what so ever. This kit will require vaccum from a pump and a restricter valve from something like a 6.5 or 6.2 chevy diesel with a 4l80e trans, the vaccum is for the new vaccum modulator that is required to keep up line pressure like on a th400. This kit will make the 4l80e a manual shift trans, whatever gear you have the shifter in is what the trans will be in no matter what rpm you are at, you will have to manally lock the converter each time as well. This is by far the cheapest way to go since it only cost about $235.00 for the kit plus install, a mechanicly minded person should be able to install this kit in 3-5 hours and will require minor case mods and several mods to the valvebody, the trans can be left in the truck for kit install though.

These are the most popular, I am sure there are others but these are the only ones I would consider doing my buildup for their popularity and known reliability. Prices range from about $550 with harness for the baumann to $1300 with the display screen for the compushift. All these controllers will adjust shift points and converter lockup, some allow for two different shift tables and other features such as the pcs that cann also control fans, gear vendors overdrive etc.

Megasquirt is also getting into the trans controller game here is a little bit of info on it http://www.jsm-net.demon.co.uk/trans/
