53 inch tires

Could anyone give me their 2 cents worth? I have a chance of getting some 53 inch Michilens and some custom wheels for my truggy. I want to go big, but not sure if my 60 and 70 will hold up. I want Rockwells, but just can't afford them right now. WHat does anyone think?

I believe they're going to be too big for your axles. My .02.

Way to big for a set of 1ton axles. hell there to much for a set of rockwells. And good amount of horsepower. They are heavy suckers to. My 20"split ring rims and set of 41" xl's weight more then a 1000pds for the set.

I ran a set of 1600R20 Goodyear AT2A's (52x16.5x20), then I swithched
to a set of 44"x19.5 Boggers, then another switch to 1600R20 Michelin XZL's which are also 52x16.5x20, then back down to a set of 1200R20 Michelin XL's (46x14.50x20).....I had 2.5 ton GMC's and a true 500hp full roller/solid lifter small block chevy......the AT2A's were extremely hard rubber and worthless, the Boggers were very good obviously in the mud but I almost ruined those in the rocks, the 52" XZL's were so-so in the rocks, worthless in the mud AND each wheel/tire combo tipped the scales at around 320 pounds... you do the math, and you'll see that my wheel/tire weight was tremendous...the 46" XL's were probably the best all around because their size/weight ratio was just right for my axle strength and gearing(6.17's) but, they were simular in rubber compound to the AT2A's, so I ended up just cutting the hell out of the tread blocks on the rocks...anyway, the 1600R20 XZL's were heavy enough and offered enough grip that I was able to break a rear axleshaft on more than one trail run......

(GMC 2.5's have a 1.75" shaft/Rockies have a 1.61" shaft....think about it)...

...my .02 cents is to avoid the really big military stuff a go with something else...if you want "big" then run a 46" Mickey Claw or 47" LTB or even the 54" Bogger......save the heavy Army tires for the guys running 5 ton and up axles... in case you decide to go ahead with the milspec stuff,though, here's a rough size chart.....1600R20=52"x16.5"x20"
1400R20=49"x14"to14.50"x20"
1200R20=46"x12"to12.50"x20"
1100R20=41"/42"x11"to11.5"x20"
395/85R20=46.5"x15.50"x20"
the first number indicates approx. section width(side wall to sidewall) the "R" means "radial"(steel belted) and of course, the "20" denotes a 20" rim size..the last one is a metric size(section width in millimetersXsidewall aspect ratioXrim size).....the 85 is a percentage(total sidewall height) of the the section width...enjoy...

You can easilt sell or trade your Dana 60 for a whole set of Rocks, one front and one rear.

I just did it and can get you a line on Rocks in Lubbock.

BTW, I got 4 wheels and tires with the deal.
