To 6BT or not to 6BT Cummins that is!

Ok So I am still here in Afghanistan, thinking about engine options for my YJ build up. For the last few months I have been looking extensively into Late model LS engines, such as L92, LQ9. Well I got a bug in me thinking about swapping my current TPI engine to a 6BTA. I have always loved these engines, been working on them for years, easy maintenance, and simple, just requires some simple repairs such as the Killer dow pin repair.

Only real problems I can see is limited transmission options(without getting real expensive) limited space for turbo piping, intercooler, height, length and weight
Not a good combo.... Most likely will have the radiator in the back to eliminate some fitment issue, But to be able to have all that torque at such low RPM's.... Of course there is the need for beef in the drivetrain department. Dana 70 front and rear should do well as I already have them at the house. 4 link front and rear, with 2.5 coilovers and 3.5 bypass shocks. Full hydraulic steering. 40-42 inch meats and bouble beadlocks.

Transfer case is a big one... depends on transmission choice. Leaning towards Atlas or NP205, but had not ruled out NP241DHD, which I think is non pto style, and can get a SYE for it. Now here is another problem.
I am planning on doing some racing with this pig. Possibly Ultra4, defiantly BRT, and other Texas based races. Do you guys think that this is all possible while staying somewhat competitive? Weight, once again will be a big issue with this.
I can find a good used 6BT for around $3000. LS engines run around the same price, but with all that darn computer junk I am trying to avoid.
Easy to make awesome power as well, and like death race, lots of smoke screen for people I pass

Discuss!

Weight is a huge difference. An LS motor will weigh about half of what a Cummins would.

I am in the same boat. I've been looking at LS's/LQ4's but am having a hard time findin good ones at decent prices.

The problem is I already have a complete running donor truck with a 6bt/nv4500. But it all comes down to weight. Sure it'll fit, but I can't make myself but that boat anchor in the front.......

Yeah I know, and that really is my only reason for hesitating. Think a LQ4 weighs like 500 lbs or so. The 6BT is like upwards of 1100 Lbs, give or take.

Check car-part.com Real easy to search.

there is a ton 5.3, 6.0's on there that are cheap. But the problem is most have a lot of mileage. The L92 is really what I was looking at, wanted the all aluminum block, but it's still around $4000-$5000 for the Caddy one's with 420 HP, and it has that stupid VVT camshaft.

And let's face it, I am looking for the WOW factor as well. Nothing like a rattling 6 cylinder smoke stack in a nimble jeep frame
Of course that could go both ways with a LS3 or similar.

Why am I not getting thread updates via email? I have noticed this for a while now. Checked my settings, and my email is correct.

I'd go 4bt if it was getting put in a yj. No way I'd put a 6bt in one and then try to race. If I were in your shoes and was looking to race I'd look for a 6.0 and do some work to it. Also if you're paying $3000 for a 6bt you're paying too much. Unless that's for the entire truck.

I agree with what your saying on the 4bt being a better option.
I have seen lower mileage engine's mated to transmission's at $3000, but we are talking about barely making 100,000 miles. Which I don't see to often.
I have done a lot of thought on the 6.0, and I like it alot

Thanks for the input.

I would also go with a 4bt but that would be if it was a trail rig/driver, pure race rig then I would go with a ls motor. In high speed racing that high weight up front will kill you on jumps.

I think all the comments about weight are true with go fast type wheeling. It really would better for a LS engine in that type of scenario. I think a good healthy LQ9 with a hot cam and heads could put out 500 HP, and respectable TQ numbers as well. Thanks for the comments guys. If it was just for recreation wheeling I would not see a problem though.

Fixed it, turns out it was going into the junk folder I made a long time ago. I think that I had subscribed to a thread on here a while back, that was constantly sending emails to me... Must have been a popular thread. I guessing I spammed it thinking it would stop just that one email..
I know I am a dummy
