So far we have welded an 8" c channel across the trailer at the front and rear of the camper and have welded the camper to them. We are going to fab some mounts to the cross rails and tie them tho the camper frame as well. Ill get ya some pics I know you were asking about how others did this. I'm not saying wee doing it right, just this is how were doing it. LOL

You can see the 2 c channels in this pic. We used 8" so all the drains and crap hanging down on the bottom of the camper would clear. He first thought about cutting the drains off. I guess I talked him out of that. There is enough clearance between the trailer and camper I can squeeze under it (had to last night to hook the battery last night. Didn't pain it that way just lucky. It may come in handy should something go wrong with the pluming wires or gas lines. Were thinking the trailer doesn't have a title and that the camper has a license plate were good?

The RV lines are a little fuzzy. I would talk to the local DMV to be sure, but I'm pretty sure they see it as a trailer towing a trailer..at least that is what I got from talking to them about mine.

Very nice either way

Not if the titled and plated trailer is on the trailer. The way they explained it to me the trailer used to haul must be inspected for capacity to ensure it's not over weight, the tow rig is within capacity, driver has the correct license, etc..

This is Texas DMV though, could be different if your buddy is in NM.

Having just gone through a three ring circus to register my trailer I suspect you are not okay. The state is cracking down due to the large number of stolen trailers. You will have to have it wieghed with weight ticket, vin checked and have a bill of sale to get a title and get it registered. If it has been stolen in the past they will take it when you do the vin check. If you dont get that done and you get stopped they will take it then. Better get it looked at up front.

I know here in texas a trailer like that with that much carrying capacity has to have a title. But to me, that's a lot of weight on 2 single wheel axles. But could be wrong.

I agree it has to have a title. We were just hoping that because it was a home made trailer with the camper welded to it, it became part of the camper. I'm sure the DMV looks at it differently, but when you modify something when dose it become something different that requires a new title?

It was a triple axle, they took one out. The camper is 4,400 and his rig is 4,200 plus the weight of the trailer lets say 3,000 that would put it at 12,000 lbs loaded subtract the ball weight 1000 lbs that puts 11,000 on the axles. The axles are 8 lug 7,500 lbs thats 15,000, hell we can put another buggy on it.

I did say something about the tires they are beat LOL. I'm hoping he gets some real good ones. I travel with him and the only thing worse than being broke down is you buddy being broke down because he didn't lesson to good advice. I'm like you and think it would of bin better with the 3rd axle. He'll try it this way before anyone could talk him into putting the other axle back in. (I know he doesn't have it) The size of the trailer shouldn't have anything to do with the carrying capacity. Should go by the axle rating?

I remember the thread about Texas cracking down on towing and trailer size. Guess it's easer hoping you don't get caught than making sure your legal.
That could be another Thread in it's self (Who knows thier tow rig is illegal but still tows with it anyway)

I agree, but to late it's already done. It's going to Oklahoma Wednesday with out a doubt. He will tow it with the camper plates even if he knows it's wrong. That's just him. So like I brought up in the other post, what if you modified the camper frame when do you have to get it inspected and retitled?

With a load like that, I would look into the laws of the states of will be pulling thru the most often. Make it 100% legal in NM and you shouldn't have many issues.

However, if a Tx, OK, Col,or Ut state trooper finds something they don't like such as bad tires, bogus regestration or overload you could be in for a much bigger issue.

Its like driving with a between your legs.
Sure it can be done...but do you want to risk it anymore?

With a $2000 mud truck and a $500 trailer I can see letting some things slide. But with a brand new camper, a buggy + the trailer....I really think travelling legal will make for a more relaxing trip.

I agree, with everything you said. Owner of the rig will not go out of his way to make sure about anything untill it bites him in the arss.

Don't get me wrong. That's a badass set up and can't wait till I can do it. But I sure would hate to get a big fine if It could have been avoided before hand.

Its nothing but c channel and expanded metal. But I guess I could be bias on this one.

Even at 5,000 the axles are going to be in the ball park of GVW.

If the trailer is home made for that rating it has to be inspected and titled.

That RV tag thing ain't gonna fly.

It sucks. But the way it is.

I agree that trailer is up around 6K empty.

Also just a thought. If the owner ads another drop leg to the front, one on each side connected together then it will make the sleeping quarters a lot more stable, won't have some much rocking when you walk around inside.

Same here, I also added 2 scissor jacks just in front of the tires to remove the suspension as well.

I just bought a KZ 16' fiberglass side camper to put on my trailer. I will cut out 2 cross members in the back for the holding tanks to sit down pretty much flush on the trader frame to frame and weld it down. I'm ready!
