Clayton, OK Questions

Was reading a thread on another forum about Clayton and how the State Police, County, and City cops love to write tickets. I've always been under the impression that the Town of Clayton enjoyed the 4x4's and it was cool to drive from the campgrounds to the trails as long as you weren't being stupid. One day soon I want to go wheel Clayton, and I want to be prepared.

So here's some questions for you folks that have gone and go a lot.. the more details the better...
  • I had always thought about camping at the lake that has the cabins and just driving the rig back and forth. can that not be done now?
  • What's the camping like on the Airstrip and how far are the trails from there?
  • Are all the trails in Clayton connected where you go go all day and night?
  • Are Frielings(sp) Green Acres and I forget the name of the other place(s) connected?

1. If your rig is not street legal, dont get caught driving on the public roads.

2. The airstrip has trails off of it.

3. There are some main trail/roads, you can loop back, some cross other trails, kind of like Barnwell.

4. I dont believe they are connected, but I might be wrong.

Keep your rig off the road or the lil local piggy will be all over you!!! Last time we were all there they had a road block set up and stopped everyone pulling a rig

They started that about 2 years ago when we had a big group. We always stayed at the hotel down town Clayton and would just drive our rigs to the trail.

They stopped Jonas and gave him a rash of sh!t and told him to pass it along to the rest of us. I haven't stayed at the hotel since.

The Airstip is right in the middle of everything. You can walk to some of the good climbs and just watch if you break early in the trip. There is enough room to park lots of big camper and trailer set ups on the strip but there is no power or water hook up.

There is enough wheeling to keep you busy for two solid days of hard wheeling but most don't make all of them. There are a few out there that will kick your butt and you will spend hours and hours getting off of them. (the back side of the mountian is a MOFO!!!!)

Green Acres is the only place I've wheeled in Clayton but have been told Freelings is getting better and better.

If or when you girls decide you want to do some real wheeling give me a heads up. I wouldn't mind spotting a few of you on the back side of the mountain!!!!

I like to camp at the airstrip when I go. Last time we went out there we were the only ones there and it was nice. The best part is like everyone said the trails are right there.

I've seen it in person years ago. I swear he took out a few trees when he dropped it down to the strip. It doesn't look like the plane has been back up since and it's in peices under the barn.

Could be part of the reason the plane is in pieces under the barn.

I'll take some the next time I'm out there wheeling. It's up under the barn now and doesn't look like anyone has touched it in years. All I know about it is that it's a high wing.

Me and the girls always stay in a cabin at the state park. We bring a kayak every year so we can fish and go swim on the other side of the lake.

I will respond to this thread after we go this weekend.

Monstercrawler, I'll shoot some pics of the back side for you. Gonna hit plucked, ate my lunch and redneck millionaire this trip.

Have fun at trees guys!!

You don't have to take any for me. I've run the back side from start to finish and it was some of the hardest wheeling I've ever done too. Jonas was leading us and made it look stupid in his 4wheel steer Zuki.

Have fun this weekend.
