Couple of Newb questions...

1. If i move my axle 1.5 inches forward will i be able to clear 38x13 inch tires with only having to trim the front of the fenders? Or would i be better to leave it in stock position and trim the fenders?

2. If i weld the gears on my 14BFF open carrier will i still be able to swap in a detroit later?

I started with a 79 with 6" of lift on 38's and had to hack the life out of mine. So even with the 1.5" move you will have to remove alot of sheetmetal.

If you use a drop in locker you will need a new carrier. If you use a full detroit it will replace the welded carrier.

Also depends on wheel back spacing you will run. I went from 35's to 44's so not sure if your lift would be enough but pretty it won't be unless you keep in on pavement.

The detroit will only replace the spider and side gears, it will use the original carrier.

You will still have to clearance the rear of the fenders to keep from rubbing and cutting a tire. With a 4" lift and 36's, I had to cut quite a bit front and rear. That was also with a zero rate. I've now pulled the zero rate and stepping up to 38's. I'm sure I'll have to cut even more.

So that is a negative on the 38s.

But what about welding the 14B. Correct me if i am wrong but if i weld the spider gears together like this isnt that the only thing that needs to be done?
Then when i put in the detroit all i need to do is pop out the spider ball and install the detroit?

Is this what a detroit no spin looks like?


So for street drivng would you guys weld for the time being then put in a detroit or would you leave it open until you could buy a detroit?

I have a light rig (Toyota, welded rear) and I hate driving it on the street when it's raining. Seems to slip the butt in around more. But, If it is dry, I really don't notice it being welded.......................... not until it's time to turn a corner. Then your hear the tires talking to you. lol

A welded Blazer on the street you will not like. If you want to daily drive it, leave it open until you get the detroit.

cwmath just gettin started
with a 4" lift a cutting the front fenders and clearencing the front bumber you should be able to make them fit especialy if you move the axle forward 1-2"s just can be scared of the just man up

I remember when i had an 85 chevy k20 with 4" and 33tsl's. They would still hit the back part of the fender when off roading.

I would move the axle forward as much as you can and trim away like said above.

It's really gonna depend on the backspacing of the wheels and the width to determine just how much to trim. Then you will have to trim some more when you get in an unlevel situation and everything flexes.

Post up some pics when you decide to do this...
