Crawl Ratio....

So i have been doing some research and i have been reading alot about crawl ratios and the like. I was wondering what constitutes a good crawl ratio? I noticed that soe people have a crawl ratio around 40 to 50 and still run 40 inch tires. I thought that the idea was to have a really low crawl ratio, but at the same time not be so low that you cant get any wheel speed.

The main question is what is a good crawl ratio for 36 to 38 inch tires?

not easy or cheep to build a rig thats really good at 1 thing. Now you want to build 1 for street/ mud/ rocks. You won't be able to build 1 really good at all 3 at once. Rocks want crawl ratio/ mud needs wheel speed/ street needs gas milage. Good luck. It's good to dream for everthing but not feesable. Just my $.02

For a standard you need about twice the crawl ratio as an automatic for low speed crawling. In an automatic the torque converter helps a lot. There are times when you do need the wheel speed even in the rocks.

Mine is:
1st gear TH350= 2.52
low low xfer = 4
axles = 5.38
crawl ratio = 54:1
Tires = 39.5 Iroks

Crawls pretty good for a 4500 lb rig.

MUDDSLINGER,
I know what i want and what will happen is not going to happen. My plan is to build up this truck and in the next year or so buy a towrig/dd. So this truck only has to be steetable for a little while. Anyways, im just trying to be able to do a little of both, Not be amazing at everything. But i understand what you mean.

Dott,
So you think 58 to 1 would be okay to do some mild crawling and mud?

I think so. I wouldn't get to carried away with that D44 in the rocks, but it may be OK since it's open.

Just noticed you don't have the same ratio F&R. That could be a major problem.

As of right now it a 3.73s in the front and 4.10s in the rear. I have only been driving it not wheeling it. There is no front driveshaft and wont be until i get the 4.56s front and rear so im not worried about that.

So you think that in the rocks the d44 with an aussie will live a short life?

I ran a 3.08 D44 w/33s open for a long time and it held up fine. With the 36s and a locker, you'll break it in the rocks, especially if you put in those lower gears. Of course you can carry spare parts and keep fixing it.

FWIW, if you're easy on it, it might live. Just depends on how much fun you want to have.

My crawl ratio is around 90:1 and I love it. It's great on the trails and rocks and when in the mud, I just grab a higher gear. I break more front axles in the mud than on the rocks and trails with the 10 bolts. As it sits, I have 5.13's, 465/208, mini spool in the rear and locker in the front. If you're easy with the throttle and don't get in a bind on the trails/rocks, you'll be fine. When in the mud, keep the tires straight when under throttle.

Could be because when you are in the mud Ryan there is always a lot of involved.

Anyway back to the the question at hand. As Dott said 50:1 with the auto is pretty good. 100:1 with a manual tranny works good. My current rig is 114:1 and does great with a 4 banger.

Mine is somewhere around 300 to 1. Do I need it this low? NO but sometimes it it fun and handy to have and play with. Build whatever YOUR needs are. JJ
