Question EFI or Pane?

I am looking into the option of running EFI on my Ford. I am not a wire kinda guy but if it is a proven kit then i would be okay. Edelbrock sells some that are around 3,000 dollars and support 450 horsepower. It sounds expensive as hell but how much is a capable propane setup going to run me? If i want the engine to run to its full capabilities it will most likely need two mixers. Can someone tell me ball park what a setup for propane like that would cost? By the time you figure in lines, tanks, brackets, and all the mixer stuff? Because if its over 1000 to 1500 then i think it is worth my while to save the extra money so i can have all that my engine is made of.

You loose power on propane on a stock engine. If you don't bump the compression ratio on a big engine they use a bunch of propane. If your engine is of a lower compression ratio I recommend EFI.

The Powerjection III will support 500 HP. Uses of the shelf injectors O2 TPS fuel pump of at least 50-60 psi. Only thing that is proprietary is the ECU.
Go here and snoop around.

Link: Professional Products Forum

Found a complete kit $1650.00.

Link: Retrotek - 70020 Powerjection III Satin Finish, Basic Kit

$1599.00 Speedway Motors (broken $20.00 gage) Mine was broke when I got it LOL. They did send another one but the pointer fell off? So I put a remote in the cab that way I can see fuel pressure at a glance.

Link: Garage Sale - Powerjection III EFI System - Speedway Motors, America's Oldest Speed Shop

Off the shelf at Speedway: $1,799.00

Link: Powerjection III EFI System, Plain - Speedway Motors, America's Oldest Speed Shop

Summit Racing $1729.00

Link: http://www.summitracing.com/search/P...tion-III-Kits/

Anyway you don't have to spend $3000.00 for a decent EFI system. You will need to know how to use a computer. The PPJIII set up is simple but you can get in and tune it for best results.

I would help, if ya needed. Not that I'm a computer guru but I've had my PPJ long enough I could screw yours.. no I mean help you set yours up.

The new PPJ4 has a spark control incorporated in the ECU.

You need to calm the hell down on this motor and go a regular propane setup.

My only problem with pane is, (I saw this @ CC06) if you run out, you are out, if you don't have a spare tank, if you are the only propane rig. I can get mogas on the trail, siphon a gal from someone. Just seems like a pane in the ***! LOL::

All but one in our group runs propane. So, when the guy running gasoline is out, he is out. LOL!!

For $1700 efi system you can afford to loose 20hp and run propane.

Funny, every engine i have converted to propane correctly,I noticed a gain in power. Especially low end grunt.

My old stock 304 greatly improved going from gas to propane.. I'm gonna miss the propane with the new motor. Now, my conversion was from carb to pane, efi vs pane would be a different issue as they can both adjust as needed unlike a carb. Regardless though I wouldn't spend $3000 on efi, hell you can put a junkyard tbi setup on using 454 stuff if needed for a couple hundred..

My vote will obviously be for pane. I know a lot of the rock bouncers use pane they don't seem to be hurting in the HP department. Here is one of the nastiest running rigs I've seen in person running pane. Not sure how he has it set-up but he's a member here and pirate so I'm sure you could find out.

Also where are you getting your CR numbers and HP numbers? Machine shop blue prints? Dyno sheets?

I'm not falling for the statement that pane isn't great on a stock motor either. My cruiser motor is bone stock and it runs absolutely perfect. It also didn't loose power going from carb to pane. If anything I gained power.

Just remember that a propane system runs off of one wire and if you run a vacuume lockoff then it runs off zero wires. There's something to be said about simplicity especially on the trail.

I also like simplicity so i will check his out. And as far as HP numbers they are just guestinations from the machinest and what i have seen edelbrock post. Just with these heads on a stock bottom end on a 350 with their cam and intake which are both rather mild it runs 410hp/408ftlbs. And since im running 383 with 10.7:1 compression instead of their 8.5:1 plus a bigger cam and alot more intake i think it should easily be in the 450 area.

i run efi but most of the guys i wheel with run pane and they seem to have zero issues and their rigs have plenty of power minus the ones with the little toy motors but for $3000 bucks you could get a complete 6.0 and still have money left over to do some upgrades and have all the power you want probably

Holy **** I want my 2:39 back!

Both have pro and cons! Trail rig, propane all day. I have had a few trucks on the street with propane, in this case I would rather have had efi! Never noticed a difference in power with either!

Ive always geared low instead of high HP..but, that may change soon..

Point is, TBI has been great for me on several rigs. EFI is expensive, Pane works great.

I did find this:

Don't know about your truck, but generators can also use both fuels, and the ones using propane have to be de-rated 10%! A 6000 watt gasoline generator is only good for 5400 watts on propane.
Source(s):
Manual that accompanied duel-fuel generator!

So I call bull on the claims that anyone got more power out of propane versus gas. If you did the carb or fi unit was not tuned or small enough to cause a power restriction. The other thing to consider is this engine is not built for propane.

Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking propane as a great choice of fuel system for offroading but the question was cost and power. I do know a single carb on gas or a single efi unit will support the kind of HP were talking about. We know what a fi unit will cost anyone that uses propane know what the duel mixer system will cost? I had propane on my rig and it ran out of power on top end and started popping like it had a rev limiter on it. The PPJIII doesn't do that.

This guy isn't runnig propane
