full hydro steering?

I am really thinking about putting full hydro steering on my Willys. Figure i will want to do it later so i might as well do it now instead of later. Anyway, i was reading on the PSC website and was looking at the full kits. My question is, what is the difference between a full kit with the P-pump compared to the full kit with the TC-pump. Next question is what is a p-pump and a tc-pump?

Thanks for any help

Jeremy

Yep, just south of Azle going to Weatherford. I have family in Weatherford so whenever I need something from them I make the drive and then go to my sister-in-laws house.

They're on the Azle end of FM730, on the east side of the road. Like MG said, they are super nice folks.

I know we dont like referring to this other site, but here are some kits that people have pieced together for a fraction of the cost of a kit. The kit I put together is included also

I have yet to find any proof that full hydro is not legal for the street.

legal or not, I don't think i want to rely on hydro only if I was at highway speed. Thnik about how many lines and fittings there are that could leak fluid and then you are in a world of hurt. Just my opinion.

I think the newer 18 wheelers are full hydro.

that's why you use the good stuff. if you have good fittings and lines that are routed and protected properly and the system is cooled and running a good temp i don't see a problem.
i love my hydro setup at highway speeds

Mine does not have return to center steering. If i were to drive it on the street (LOL), i would buy a kit. But mine works great out on the trails. Mine is only a single ended ram set-up unlike most the kits.

When I started, I knew nothing about them either. But I did alot of research on pirate and chuckstrucks, and was able to build it quite easily. If it will be something thats going to worry you out on the trails, then just buy a kit.

TC style pump

P pump

If your using a chevy motor or chevy style brackets use the p pump. TC style is found on most newer engines or you can convert brackets to run a TC. We use TC for the smaller size but either will perform well.

Double ended ram will return to center IF you run a load reactive steering valve. Even still it relys on your alignment to return to center, if not enough caster it won't come back very fast if at all. Non load reactive will stay turned untill you turn the other way. My experience with full hydro on the road has only been with a non reactive valve and lets just say it makes for a sporty drive.
And for what it's worth here in CO full hydro isn't legal, they still want you to be able to turn in the event of hydraulic failure.

Full hydro is illegal. The law says you have to have a mechanical linkage. That being said, my full hydo POS kit steers and drive so much better then my stock steering. Itís night and day and I really feel safer now.

I have heard that too, but no one can show me where it says that. Got a link it?

No the D.O.T books state you must have a linkage ur steering wheel to a steering box. Its not worded like you have to have linkage for the steering box to the axle. ive read it in three or four different year D.O.T books.

I drove my truggy on the street for a will around town.it was inspected. But the pinon brakes were not legal. It states you must have brakes mount to each moveing wheel. I mocked up some fake wheel brake with some old rotors and calipers and 3/8 plate for rotors.

I think I found it through google but the TXDPS site looks to be down, keep gettin a server is down message when I click on the link.
Here's the google search...
http://www.google.com/search?q=vehic...te.tx.us&hl=en

If TX has anything similar to here, they want you to be able to control the vehicle in event of a hydraulic failure. Sure you can kinda steer if the motor dies with full hydro, blow/rub through a hose than you can see their point.

Is a blown hose more dangerous than a broken TRE or rag joint? Yes, I have seen both end in a bad wreck on the highway.

I would say yes. You'll lose control either way but blow a hose you have 0 control (kinda like a rag joint, that's why rags haven't been used in the last 20+ years), break a TRE and you still have some control...sorta. If you think about it from a suit and tie sittin behind a desk making laws that knows no better it makes sense. Mechanical linkage from your hands to the wheels is better right?
