full-size axles and comp cut rear fenders on a Jeep CJ and still be street legal?

I am considering going with full-size axles (HP44 front, 9" rear, 66"wms-wms) on my Jeep CJ and moving the rear axle about 8 inches to the rear which will mean cutting the rear fenders competition-style. My issue is that the jeep needs to be street legal. Has anyone had issues with running this setup and driving it on the street or getting inspections? I expect with 8-10" of tire sticking past the side of the fenders, some sort of flares might be needed, but what about the rears? would some sort of 'mudflap' be needed?

The rear of my K10 is dove tailed. I had 1 tons and 42's. It passed inspection with no problems. The DOT law for rear tires was( I havent looked or asked lately) DUAL REAR WHEELS had to have mud flaps.

Groovy. Spent a couple hours today with the and a pile of leaf springs, now the axle is about 8" further rearward. Ran out of daylight and was only able to get the sheetmetal cut on one side. No going back now.

It isn't actually a CJ, it is a left hand drive (normal side) 1970 DJ5. We already removed the roof and doors (roof had rusted through at the seam all the way around). Had a 153 Chevy 4 cylinder and powerglide stock. In the pics above it still has the very narrow d44 rear (48" wms-wms), will be swapping to a full-width 9" rear and high pinion d44 front soon. Will be using a Jeep D20 transfer, th350 trans and a small block Chevy. Will get more pics soon, my digicam died and just got a new one.
