Glass Pack question

Hey Y'all,

I've got a question. My 1998 Chevy Tahoe has a glass pack muffler on it. The other day I noticed that the sound was changing. This morning, the truck acted like someone stuck a ba in the tail pipe. I lost all power, strange poppin', and hesitations, and the check engine light came on.

What happens when a glass pack gets clogged? I've never had one before.

Thanks,

Manny

Does it have a cat?? Never heard of a glasspack plugging, especially as free flowing as they are. Not saying its impossible though.

Drive it for a few minutes jump out of the car and take a look at the cats. If one of them is glowing red thats bad.

Thanks guys. I'll do that in the AM. I have a feeling your right. I've already looked up the Magnaflow part number. Wasn't expecting this, but I'll get it fixed. Funny thing is, I haven't smelled the usual sulfur smell when a cat goes bad.

I wonder if, since the check engine light is on, if it is throwing a code. Where can I go to get that code read?

I would almost bet the code will show o2 sensor. Last time I checked they were over a hundred dollars per..you should have 4.

I run the magnaflow high flow cat on the K5..iirc it was lot less expensive than a factory replacement.

I went to Advance Auto today and got the code read. It says: P0403 Cylinder 4 misfire.

Engine is bogged down. Has a backfire. Accelerates but is dogged. Check Engine Light will be solid, but flash at times, indicating a fuel issue.

I hope I didn't get shitty gas as this has happened right after I filled up with Shell Gas at a station I have had NO problems with.

Any ideas?

Will Seafoam cause this? I have Seafoam in the engine oil right now. Could that have possibly fouled the plugs?

No, Seafoam won't do that. Sure sounds like bad gas, low fuel pressure, clogged air filter, or plugged up cat.

Does it only do it on acceleration? Any change at idle?

Air filter is brand new. Not sure on fuel pressure. Plugged up cat possible. Hope it's not bad gasoline.

Idle is rough, hesitates on acceleration. Dogged on acceleration. Sounds like popcorn on acceleration.

While idleing, pull the #4 plug wire off..see if idle changes. If the plug and pulse are fine it should idle really rough. If no change check plugs, wires, etc. If it gets worse, check to see how much spark you are have and/or check out at the injector.

How did it run before?
If this was a sudden change then I'd think wiring/sensor.
On vortec's, they have a common fuel rail?
If so, could your number 4 injector be wide open?
Worse luck could be that you got the bent distributer problem.
I've seen 3 of the guys I work with in the past 8 years have that happen to there chebbies.
Even worse, flat lobe on your cam......
If you smack the underside of the cat does it sound like it's got pebble's/ or BB's in it?
