Living quarters/storage on bumper pull

Been looking into ways to get some form of living quarters for wheeling trip, but want to keep from dumping endless amounts of $$$ into a setup. Ideally, a gooseneck/cabover setup would be easiest, but that presents a few issues. My tow rig is too tall for a regular gooseneck and I would have to modify the trailer to tow it safely, secondly I cannot park a gooseneck anywhere, so now we add in storage fees. I also kicked the idea around of pulling doubles with a pop up behind my 18' car hauler, but that would be a pain in the rear I think. Here is what I have been brainstorming about.

Build a box on the front of my 18' trailer, similar to how racecar guys build theirs, but larger. I am thinking width of trailer, 4' long and 8' tall(at front). Then similar to a cabover, build a section that overhand to the rear, over the hoof of my rig that would hold a full size bed. The overall height from deck in rear would be 9', which helps wind drag, and also allows water to drain off roof. That would leave plenty of room inside the box to build some shelves to hold spare parts, and to hold tools and weekend supplies. I think if built right it can be pretty light, and very roomy, and serve all necessary purposes. Overall this would leave me 14' of deck and my rig is 13'2", if need be I can add a lil to rear of trailer and be ok. Only other concern would be tongue weight, but honestly i would only be 2' further back than I normally am with the rig, and the weight of the box and items should balance it out I would think. Anyone have any input positive or negative on this??

Only killer on those is space. I want the space for sleeping, and for storage of parts/tools. Not quite sure that the truck sleeper has enough space for that, but not 100% sure.

Why not just get a cabover for your truck? Install when going wheeling and the. Remove when not in use. My main reason for wanting living quarters is a shower for the wife.

Very interesting. I'm in the same damn boat. The shower situation and some cool down time in the A/C is the wife's biggest complaint. My bumper pull is damn nice, but just too short. I'm considering extending it and dropping in a cabover...but damn that shiat adds up quick.

Jeremy has a good setup. You can find cabovers from $1000 on up an wont lose any space on the trailer. You do sacrifice room for supplies and stuff, but you won't need as many ice chests and stuff since you'll have a fridge. I thought about the popup in tandem with the trailer too, but sounds like a headache to maneuver. I really do not think there is a cheap alternative.

Yes there is. Have your compadre trade their mustang for a badass travel trailer then you can tow the rigs while he tows the TT.

My plans are to extend my current trailer or sell it and get a bigger one for next wheeling season hopefully with a cheap cabover.

Here's my new trailer. It's an 18ft trailer, box has extensions running 1' forward past the deck. I believe its 3-4' deep, width of the trailer, and maybe 4-5' tall if I remember right. It's enough can put a twin mattress, hang a window unit off the side and be just fine. I just don't trust anyone from locking my *** in it! Haha didn't add much weight at all up front.

the cabover in the truck is a no go as well. 1, its a shortbed so the cabover is small, and most do not have showers when that small. and 2, my truck is too tall for a cabover IMO. Obviously lowering the truck wouldnt hurt, but I dont want to change the tow rig at all, and lowering isnt as simple as just swapping stock stuff back on. Also, I have a toolbox in the truck that hauls alot of supplies, as well as plans to put an L tank in it here in the near future. As for the shower, I have ideas on how to put one on the setup I described actually, granted it would be an outdoor setup but it would work. As for the wife, she has not and will not ever ever go wheeling with me LoL, her choice not mine.. Now to be honest, this would just be a 2-3 year setup as we hope to move in a couple years to bigger home, and I will have room for a gooseneck. Citizen, very similar to that setup, just taller. i want to be able to stand in it and actually be able to sleep 2 people inside.

David, the big difference between our setup is your rig is probably quite a bit taller and longer than mine. I just measure, and I need 52" to clear the cowl, so I have plenty of room to pull it off, plug the rig is under 14' overall. a 20' trailer would be awesome, but I honestly believe I can pull this off on an 18'. I bet you would have to get yours extended to 20'+.

generic paint picture of my idea

Not my exact trailer, but general idea. red would be the door, and the yellow would just be side paneling/support for the bed section.

That's a cool one. Looks like it has water hookups on the outside.

yeah, what i have thought for a shower is to use an outside shower setup. If I can manange to make the section where the bed is 6' instead of 5' then you could stand under there ans shower and be protected from wind from 3 sides. Just build a simple curtain setup and be done. I'm not sure I can get 6' though, so the other option is a shower out of one side of the cabin, and build a removable curtain setup there as well. Regardless, the shower setup and be worked in one war or another, so thats not much of a concern. Obviously it wouldnt have a restroom, however a camp toilet would be easy enough to use and they work great (we use this for our fishing cabin). I guess my biggest concern would be making sure I could do this ans get the proper tongue weight, which I think wont be an issue as I position things up front as needed to balance the weight.. Also, need to see what I can do about possibly moving the cabin forward maybe a 1' or so and that would help as well. Not dead set on it by any means, but very very interested, and open to any and all input.
