Manual vs Auto

Need some input,

I gonna rebuild the mighty J20.
old axles are going out and D60/14BFF 5:38 is going in.
out AMC 360, in Volvo TD40 (I6 turbo diesel)
out Dana 20, in NP205/203 doubler.
and new tires 37-42"

the problem is the gearbox should I rebuild my th700 and get overdrive or should I get and SM465?

The rig will be used on the highway and my concern is that my revs will be too high at 55mph.

Its fairly hard to find a 32 spline SM465 over here

I'd rather wheel an auto. But that's me.

As long as the 700R4 is built to withstand the power, I'd go with the 700R4. People are gonna argue on the amount of money you'll need to sink into building the 700R4, but think about the $ & time to find and build the 465...which would include the clutch assembly, clutch, mods to the x-member...I think you'd be happier with the 700R4. Personally I wish I woulda gone with a 465 instead of the 700R4 just for the brute strength and I really won't need OD...Oh well, what's done is done now

What size tires? That will make a big difference on the RPMs.

Thumbs up

By the way, this the final gearing with this set up

th700 65:1
Sm465 140:1

rev at 55mph / 90kmh 37" tires
Th700 1920rpm
Sm465 2700rpm

rev at 55mph / 90kmh 42" tires
Th700 1700rpm
Sm465 2400rpm

I'm leaning towards the th700 right now.

It would be fun to renovate an automatic for the first time.

max rev is 4000 on a TD40 and max torque is at 2500prm.

nv4500... best of both worlds, nearly bullet proof with the right clutch and shafts and you get to keep your OD but still play w/ a stick.

I have to put my $.02 in.. For brute strength and long life the manual is the way to go..
Offroad the auto offers the ability to "power brake" the rig which gives some great control... but the cost is elevated temps under the hood and under the rig which I personally don't like... and you are slipping the torque converter and clutched INSIDE the tranny.. So if/when you have issues you have to pull it and take it to be completely rebuilt.. many autos do last many years and work like a champ, I am not saying they are not a great option.

The "hand shacker" will practically last forever if it has good gear oil in it.. if you fix leakes quickly they are like the energizer bunny The big draw back to the manual is gearing.. to get it low enough you need low gears in the axles too.. BUT if you run a manual with a doubler set up of some sort you get the best of all worlds.. this can happen with a doubler set up or a 4 speed Atlas for example.. Will either of these options cost some $, yes, but with the manual set up with a doubler or 4 speed transfer case you are pretty much set for your life time with routine maintenance and maybe a clutch every so often..

I am wheelin' a T19 with a D20 myself and 5.38's in the pumpkins.. I am planning a doubler set up in the future...

Good luck either way you go..

If i would find a NV4500 the choice would be simple. Ill check what can be found. I gonna work on my TD40 engine first.

I went for a ride today and the revs are quite high with my current setup. 360/T18/D20 4:88 and 35" so today I wanted overdrive.
