New Build--Buggy or ??

I'm starting to gather parts for a new trail rig. It will be for rocks, trails and hills (BMRA is right down the road). I thought I had mine made up on a 4 seat buggy, but have been looking at maybe a small crew cab truck ie dakota, tacoma, s-10 etc. I'm thinking the enclosed cab would be nice in the colder months along with A/C in the hott months of wheeling. I just don't know how much visiablity I will loose with a paritally full bodied small 4 door cab truck.

If I went the truck route I would narrow the front and back half the rear right behind the cab. It wouldn't have a bed at all, just a place to hold a fuel cell and 2 batteries.

Bases for the rig is 2 steering rockwells, hummer rims, 47" ltbs, V8, EFI, auto trans with a klune/NP205 or Atlas 4spd. Also it will be linked front and rear with air shocks.

Those that have had both (buggy and enclosed cab) please tell me what you liked more.

Maybe it's because I want one but I think you would be happy with a 4 seater buggy over any enclosed cab rig. I like the look of an enclosed cab rig but it's hard to keep them looking nice after a few months of riding. Before you know it you will be pulling doors, fenders, and then the bed after they get beat up on the trails.

Either way, with the parts list you have it sounds like it's going to be a sick rig.

i think with eric's young kids and wife wanting to go with him, he is thinking of the comfort factor. it is a lot more enjoyable when your family is wheeling with you and they may not want to be in the elements as much as he.

I've had both and complain about my buggy all the time but I would do it again. How many times do you wheel in the winter compared to summer? Like monstercrawler said you just can't keep a full bodied rig looking decent after a trip ot two. I skined mine and after one trip they are all smashed up and its narrower than what you are talking about, and you cannot beat the visibilty.

ha ha

All my full bodied rigs you couldn't see chit out off and were are pain to keep the body from raking everything you go by, especially at gilmer. W/ a buggy you have better visability and no sheet metal to wory about

I appreciate all the feed back guys! I think I will still go with the buggy, the wife even said this morning she would rather see me with a buggy. I was surprised to hear her say that. I think she knows that's really what I want and have wanted for a long time.

That's probably the one I'm going to go with Rastus. I actually found a guy in KY that builds something similar, but the distance I would have to drive in fuel cost makes up for the price difference. It will probably be the 1st of Jan. before I can give BTF a call to place my order. I think they are a couple of months out as of about 2 weeks ago when I talked to them on the phone.

I have talked to this guy a few times over the phone and he knows his stuff. Tell him to build two buggies and we will just make a road trip.

I also like the chassis that Jimmy's4x4 out of Colorado builds. For some reason their web site is not working today.

Or, just tell Jonas that you want to build a mud buggy out of a Rockcrawler chassis and he'll have you one built in two weeks.

Thanks for the heads up muddy! I sent him a PM over on pirate to see what a CJ based 4 seater will cost.

Monster--if you are serious I will probably be ready in early Jan. to buy my chassis. I have a contact through a trucking company that could pick them up for us and should come in a lot cheaper than going to pick them up. NC is a long haul.
