Question np205 Overdrive

The idea is simple. I have seen its been done before. The idea just popped into my head when I was driving down the road. My dually has an sm465 and sucks *** at 70mph as far as fuel economy goes. If you take a divorced 205 and turn it backwards you will have a 2:1 driveshaft speed increase if you put the tcase in 4low.

I have two concerns, it would be turning the input (normally the output) backwards so would that effect oiling? And number two, are the gears cut so that they are like a ring and pinion and are stronger in the forward rotation?

Oh and if the tcase is in 4low, everything is hauling *** inside there, for an extended road trip, do you think the fluid would get too hot?

I'd think this much overdrive would put your engine at too low of an rpm to be useful at highway speeds unless you have a big block with tons of torque and you had super low axle gears to help adjust for the high overdrive.

I doubt the 205 will be happy spinning that fast for long periods of time anyways. It could probably work with some sort of heat sink cover on the pto ports but who knows for how long.

The best solution would be to upgrade the trans to one with an OD but I'm sure you already know this and you're just thinking outside the box.

I'd say give it a try if you have the parts and see how it works out.

Expensive!

As far as the gears, I don't think it matters either way, the gears are cut the same on both sides, unlike a ring pinion's drive and coast cut gears. You could plump in a oil transfer pump, filter and cooler to aid in cooling the T case. But I agree the case would be screaming at high way speeds and might not last to long... Like Rockwell axles and pinion brakes at highway speeds, lol

Cool idea either way

Edit: Then there is hills and stuff and hunting for the right gear, and not being able to shift the T case while driving, that would be a pita.

More expensive than buying a nv4500 and all the stuff that goes with it cross members and driveshafts? Going to be real close in cost once all said and done.
