Observation of the modern after market

Like the title states.

Have you payed attention to the aftermarket parts world? If you have not you are a freeking mall crawler and you need to leave this thread now because you are the root of the problem!

This is specificly about tires.

Have you noticed the trend towards 17, 18, and 20" rim sizes?

Apperantly the entire aftermarket tire world has gone faggot! Or they have watched "Boyz in da hood" one to many times.

Currently there is only a hand full of tire manufacture's that still makes a tire in the 15 and 16.5" rim size that real wheelers need and want. Let alone a sticky. God bless Interco for makeing a sticky in those size's, but they only make it in a Irock. And the Irock is the cheep @ss tire of the 4x4 world. They are the perfect example of "you get what you pay for". AKA they are cheep @ss crap! You might as well use a party balloon as your tire you will get the same result. (nothing but flats) And yes I know how they are I have had two sets. Irocks suck sweaty donkey nut sack! period!!!

So the question is when and what will it take to make the tire makers listen to us and make a tire that still has enough side wall to wrap around a trail obstical and keep we the wheelers moving forward? Instead of the GAY @ss obama hood bling [email protected] that they are produceing now.

dont agree with you about iroks (altough i do have a tire plug sticking out the side of one of mine) but ive noticed that too. what also bothers me is if you go larger than a 42 they have to be super wide. for example i would like a set of 44 pitbulls or tsl or something but then they are 20" wide, ofcourse the wider the heavier...

That is another excelent point Jeff. What is it with the sasquatch width tires? we should have a choice. If you want to play in the 5 min. of fun 5 hours of clean up work mud crud, so be it. On the other hand if you want to push the limits of a rig make a narrower tire that you can turn.

Sorry and no offence intended to those that only have mud to wheel, but mud SUX. It is best left to the highschoolers that are just learning how to drive a 4x4.

i don't know why you hate the iroks so much. i'm kinda biased since there the only tire i've hardcore wheeled but i've never had a flat or a single problem with them, and i've schooled many rigs with other tires and kept up with the stickies.
i guess when you wheel a big fat pig it can take a toll on tires

when i wear these out or have a bunch of extra cash layin around im gonna get a tire in 17" wheel so i can run bigger brakes and reduce the sidewall roll

I have also noticed that the bigger the rim size the bigger the price tag. A 35 for a 20 in rom is more than double athe price of a 35 for a 15 in rim. You would think that more rubber on the aide wall would make it more expensive but it's the other way around. I well, I don't like the 20s so I get to buy cheaper tires.

i think that is because they had to build a whole new mold for that wheel size and there are less out there.
one day you will see 17+ tires that are as cheap as the 15"s

Snick, who took a piss and a crap in your wheaties brutha? Believe me I feel your frustration with tire makers. Common sizes ignored. Too many 44's and above. Who can honestly afford $600+ for a single tire? No issue to those who can, but the 18-20 inch rim crowd on a 4x4 is nothing more than "pimp my ride" bling. 17 inch now seems to be the common standard and most are ignoring that size. Just because stock trucks from the dealerships come with 18 to 20's, doesn't mean tire manufacturer's should cater to those, and leave us behind....

As for the MUD, I only ask you not to bash us mud players. There is enough division and politics in 4 wheeling as it is. The MUD vs Rocks division does not need to exist. To each their own. I don't do rocks, but I won't say it SUCKS or is stupid, dumb or weakass wheeling. Please don't say the same for MUD.

Cheers!

# 1 you are so wrong. The sets I have had are on light wieght jeeps. They have been nothing but a PITA.

#2 you have been PBB brain washed as to the the sidewall roll.

go back and read threads and there and on other forums and study them.
When you pick out the BS you will get back to the truth. You need sidewall to enable the tred to wrap around what ever to give max grip on the obstecal.

Manny, Like I said "no offence"

I cut my teeth with my first 4x4 playing in the mud. But I quickly learned that the 5 hrs. of work changeing diff fluid, cleaning bearings, and serviceing the rest that goes with playing in the slop for 5 min. just was'nt worth it IMHO.

Belive me I know the thrill of droping the hammer on a built V8 in the mud, and yes it is addictive. But for me and many others it is just not worth the headache of the clean up if you understand what I'm saying.

I mean been there done that in the neederland area on pipe lines. Even with a diesel back before all the "chip" chit.

Well there is the prob with Irocks. paper thin side walls and tread.

You saw my rig at KOH and it tips the scales at a max 4g's with a cast iron block and the hugeness of it.
Even at that I run 2psi in my boggers and they squish like a whoopie cushion. Yet zero side wall roll. even on a 16.5x9" rim.

Irocks just don't have the beef!

But back on topic this is not a Irock/mud disscusion. Yeah It went there, but back to the meat.

When are tire manufactures going to stop makeing only faggot size tires?

Some yes, but more sidewall equals more roll over on off camber. Anything smaller than a 17" rim is for the trailer anyways.

Believe me MUDDSLINGER, there is nothing PC about me. I tell it how it is. I have more money into my truck than most folks here. I don't brag about my rig. She stands on her own merits. Do not interpret that as to say that my rig is better than everyone elses. I do not have that attitude. I'm just building the best rig I know how.

As for others, whether you have 44's or 29's, small block, big block, ricer, full size, mini truck, locked or open, tow hooks or not, and whatever else you can think of, it's all about getting together and playing.

Some like to take 12 hours to get over one obstacle. Others like to bury their rigs in deep MUD. Whatever way, be happy you can play.

PC is for liberals. That however is a whole different argument.

No offense taken man. It's all good. I completely understand your point of view and can appreciate it. I'm just own of those stange mudders who enjoys the cleanup and maintenance just as much, if not more, than the muddin' itself.

When wheelers can get together and put a coordinated effort in petitioning the manufacturers for what they want.

I have tried with Interco. I am trying to get them to make a 18/39.5/17 Bogger. That size would be bee-otchin'. So far all I've gotten from them is that they liked the idea, thought it would be good, and they put it on the list to manufacture with a TBD date.

I keep trying though. I hope you will too.

Sales rules. There was a day not too long ago when you could not get a load range D or E in a 18" tire. Now they're easy to find, even 20".But if sales drop in the 15, 16 and 16.5" sizes, they will reduce mfg of those sizes.

black01edge just gettin started
17 is the new 15. i saw that comin 2 years ago. the entry level trucks are coming with 17s to allow for bigger brakes. yes looks have alot to do with it but the manufacturers say its brakes. i would run 17s to get bigger brakes on my rig if i had 42s or something.

coming from someone who seen it in action....if you put in a request for a tire with high enough demand for a tire company such as interco to make it worth their while then they more than likely will do it. BUT, if two people go to them and say hey we want this tire why wont you make it? i wouldnt do it either. its just not business smart. they wouldnt make any money on the deal.

with high demand comes more sizes. thus, 17s and 20s. 18s...not so much. very awkward rim size for a truck. not a big selection...

I thought that's what they did with the new SX2?? They make them for a 16.5 rim too.

I think the trend is going bigger period. The overall tire diameter is enormous now,(54" boggers ie if you want them) I think if you are running a tire this big a 20" wheel will still offer enough sidewall flex to wheel well.

I would really like to see more 16.5 sizes in the LTB myself. Something along the lines of 40-42" would be great.

Oh yeah and I hate buying tires for my dodge ram that came stock with 20" wheels because they are ridiculously priced, so I buy used ones from the guys that buy 20" wheels to put on there trucks that their daddy bought them because they go to baylor. That's just me though.

I'm happy to see 16.5's are going to be around a while. There are plenty of Walker Evans and Trail Ready bead locks out there, but the HUGE influx the last few years in the H1's out there will almost garuntee the longevity of the 16.5. Us poor boys have a say in the market, too.
