Yes, just get a standard liability policy - best bet is to just add it to your existing auto policy so you will get a multi-vehicle discount.

You will need to have a VIN for it to get it insured though and be sure to tell them it is not your primary vehicle but for recreation only.

[opinion]
I wouldn't bother if you are only going to get statutory minimums. Hypothetically, if you really were to hurt yourself or someone else, or cause property damage, while wheeling, 20/40/20 isn't going to get it. Be sure to include PIP (personal injury protection) and UIM (uninsured/underinsured motorist) protections - they are cheap and can make the difference in getting medical bills paid for [auto insurance would serve as secondary insurance for you and pay all your deductibles if you were hurt]. I would suggest a minimum of $100k liability if you are going to do it. The cost isn't that much different for liability with most companies and it gives you a decent margin of comfort if something happened.

Think about hit, if you were to roll over and hit, say, 3 observers on the trail. 100k in medicals would be very easy to hit.

state minimums are 20/40/15 or 2000 per person not to exceed 40000 per claim and 15000 on property damage. as far as pdum not real feasible as it covers your veh if you get hit by an unisured driver or underinsured driver.unless you do a lot of high speed offroading i think you are wasting money on a trail rig. look into an umbrella policy for 100,000 , should be a lot cheaper.

just talked to state farm, doesnt have to be registered or inspected. will cover 100% of add-ons, upgrades. just have to provide pictures and a detailed spreadsheet of cost of each part. SWEET.

full coverage not just liabilty. covers total value of vehicle if stolen or "totaled" so I feel much better now. and it is with state farm where I have my other vehicles covered.

what coverages are you looking for, remember that collision has a deductable, which is if you hit a rock, tree or water. also wont cover breakage or if being used in a competition.ie a pay for play park or rock crawling event as this may be deemed as intentional damage.

That's what I did, but it sure 'nuf costs me more than $14/mo. Some organized offroad events and parks are starting to require liability on Jeeps and such. I used to drop/start the insurance as needed for events, but now I just keep it all the time. Even though my YJ is not currently reg'd for the street, I do take short test drives from time to time and I figure having liability coverage might help convince a cop I'm not a hardened criminal.

i'm not looking for coverage on broken parts or a collision with a rock or tree.

mainly looking for collision with a $50,000 hummer, a human being etc or theft. dont want to get sued.

I need to ask about the pay to play places, since these are the only legal spots in texas I would hope that they will cover it.

I talked to my agent today, since I am at the renewal stage. My regis and inspection expired on Dec 31 so I was going to drop the insurance also. My main concern is am I covered if the rig falls foff the trailer and kills somebody or damages something.

He said, If I drop the coverage on the trail rig:
1. Trailer is covered by tow rigs liability
2. Trail rig is covered by tow rigs liability as long as it is strapped to the trailer
3. If tow rig comes off trailer and causes damage, the damage to others is not covered.

Furthermore, if my son (who goes with me) were excluded from the tow rigs coverage (to save money), and he was driving while the accident occurred, none of it would be covered.

I must have liability ins in order to get the truck registered, but, it doesn't have to be registered to have liability coverage.

The easy solution is to keep the coverage but convert it to a "pleasure vehicle" for the best rate. That means the least mileage/usage.

We talked about some forms of "ATV" insurance but I'd have to find another company for that.
