Polished Aluminum: How to clean, shine, protect?

Hi Y'all,

Just like the title says. I need to clean, shine and polish my aluminum brackets, pulleys and valve covers on my engine. I have not a clue how to do it, and Google isn't being of much help.

If anyone knows how to do it, or a shop here in SA that will clean and shine the aluminum, I would appreciate some help.

Thank you!

Manny

how dirty are they? simple green, soap whatever to get them clean. then go at it with your favoriate flavor or polish. if there small pieces by hand if there something big hit them with a polishing wheel

go to your local truck stop and talk to the guys that polish the tractor trailers. They usually have a rubbing compound that they will sell you or tell you where you can get it. We have some guys here in mcallen that are the **** at poishing aluminum. They also use a 7" grinder with buffing pad at low rpm.

Thanks Mike. Might be good enough for Government work, but not good enough for me.

Rouge. That is correct. i used to make some great cash for college doing motorcycle parts. use a 7" grinder with buffing pad like mentioned above. Get two or three different compounds of rouge. You can get some 400 grit and wet sand it with WD-40 first if it is really bad and pitted. the get after it with jewelers rouge, stepping down from rough to fine compound. Get some old gloves, they will be black soon enough. The aluminum can hot as hell. Finish it off with a good aluminum polish like mothers that will protect it. You can also do Stainless this way. I polished all the Stainless button heads on my Scrambler to Chrome finish. Have fun it take time and wear a mask.
