school me on JK's

what are your thoughts on JK's?
how would you build it?
2 or 4 door?
start with a 2wd model and build it as Dustin said in a post or start with a 4wd model?

just wondering as I was kicking around the idea of getting a JK as a daily/weekend warrior rig.

2wd if building a hard core & 37+ tires, the stock axles are crap for hard wheeling...
They are expensive, yes, but a 4wd with 33s would be a nice DD, I rented a 4door all stock one in Utah, it drove nice, 21mpg!

This is true, however relatively capable with a set of 35s 2-3" lift and lockers.

3.6l runs good but I think it is underpowered.

Great around town beaters if you leave street tires on it any thing even semi aggressive wears like *** and rides like a 3 legged donky.

3.6 or 3.8? in 2012 they put the 3.6 in them. I heard they were an improvement over the 3.8

The 3.6 ain't no joke. It pushed my wife's Durango really good. I was happy with the pentastar motor.

If I were to get an all around jeep, it'd be a Tj-LJ rubicon. The best of all worlds......

I liked my 2door, wish it had more power. I would really like to have a 4door on 37s. Only thing I didn't like was all the abs and trac controll.

Since you're a pretty savvy guy runnin Co2 and all, I think you would be happiest in a 4dr non rubi with an aftermarket locker in the front. I think the puny axles will be fine for what you are asking for and the price would be a little more affordable

knobby97 just gettin started
If I had to do it again I'd go 2wd 4 door, then swap in a 6.2 LS, 6l80, atlas, and d60 or custom 9" combo. Granted this would be if I found a screaming deal on 4 door carcass with a crap driveline and decent interior.

just wondering as I was kicking around the idea of getting a JK as a daily/weekend warrior rig.
Start with a 4x4. Save a little headache. Those 241s are pretty solid. Already fixed yolk too.

No offense to anyone, but it's one of those rigs you have to drive and wheel before you can give a real opinion. ( given its a step down from the hard-core, and more in the expedition/family style wheelin).

For cost, there are great deals out there everywhere, I found 2 actually. The stock axles are far from as weak as people thing. I beat the tar outta mine and did all I wanted. River, Colorado, Moab.

I had 37s on both, with lockers and started with stock shafts and never broke one. Upgraded both ends to alloys with no trouble still. I would recommend the C gussets and sleeves on the front ends. Never had an issue with them

As for the 3.8.... Sure it's underpowered, but it damn sure runs better than the 4.0 hands down. I understand the I-6 low end torque but I had a few in the past to compare to. Hated the 4.0 for highway, wheeling it was fine. 3.8 is better on the highway.

They are relatively cheap to upgrade. 3.5" Clayton front springs, 2.5" rear, extended brake lines- $500 bucks

I highly recommend getting the synergy track bar relocation brackets. Makes it track strait and will have no bump steer

Best thing to do-- high steer kit. It's cheap... Go to dodge dealership and buy a right hand drive drag link, then buy a flip bushing from any of the offload places (poly, synergy, ballistic fab, ect). It WILL drive like factory on 35-37s.

Most JKs have shitty gears. My first had 4:10 and I was happy with. Second JK was a rubicon but I put 5:38s in. Ran great and had full use of OD on the highway.... Still getting 16-17 highway.

4 door - 4x4!

My thing about it was I've had a **** ton of wheelin rigs over the past years. I have little time to actually build something now and lose interest.

So I pay a 3-400 dollar payment and do piddly easy stuff over a few months and I have a solid RELIABLE wheeling right that's legal on the road.

We all know while building **** and maintaining we spend far more than 400/ month. Just my take on the JK..... For the record I'm not saying y'all cant build a low maintenance and reliable wheeling rig...... Just me.

I thought about buying one before I got my Tacoma but the towing capacity steered me away. Dont get me wrong there is very little going down the road that looks better than a lifter JK on 35's or 37's.

I'd like to find a salvage one (flood or something) gut and throw a good drive train and 60s under..... Good wheelbase and tons of room for kiddos and gear.
