Shop press questions

What size press do I need to do like carrier bearings and such? Would a HF one suffice or should I spend some money and get a better one?

Dunno, maybe this should have went in metal fab??

While you could probably get by with a 12k one I went with a 20k and am very happy with it. Mine is from Harbor Freight, its no precision machine but it gets the job done and was a reasonable price. One problem with the HF presses is that they are narrower than similarly powerfull better brands. My 20 ton is easily wide enough to handle brake drums and rotors and such so its not that big of a concern, and if something is too big to fit inside the frame you can still support the end thats not being pressed so its not that big a deal.

yep

I also have the HF 20 ton job and am very happy with it, never realized all you can think up to do with the thing, press bearings of course but I have "custom bent" metal with mine and flattened tube ends etc...
HF ran the 20 ton job about this time last year on sale for $129 about the same price as the 12 ton job and the difference in construction and heavy duty materials was worth it.

I just bought a new one from Northern. I gave 269.00(?) for it and it works really good. Its the 60,000 one. I had the smaller one from hf and twisted it up pretty bad. The northern one was the best priceed one for the quality that i wanted. And i happened to be in d/fw and could just pick it up. It might be more than you are wanting to spend though.
