scrap yard

Did you try a scrap yard, they may have a piece small enough for what you need and generally scrap steel is running around 15 to 20 cents per pound right now. I will also e-mail Stretch and see if he knows of one near you.

I would try Wylie first. They usually have plenty of scrap laying around. If they don't have it, try the steel yard in McKinney. It's on the south side of Eldorado, just east of Hwy 5. If you're willing to drive a ways, Greenville steel has the best prices when compared to Garland, Wylie or McKinney.

Big bins with various sizes of 1/4 and 3/16 plate at Garland Steel near Forest and Shiloh. If you can't find one piece big enough, weld two together. That's how I made a skid plate for my t-case and a buttface for my front D44. It's way cheaper to buy the stuff that's outside in the yard. I love looking around the yard out there. Most of the yard stuff needs lots of cleanup (if you care...I just clean where I weld), but the plate I'm talking about has always been pretty clean with very little rust (it's coated or painted or something).

i went to garland steel, and i ended up getting some 3/16 in steel.

i still gotta put the a skid for the front side, and im going to run some support on the back of it to the frame too.

then im guna get all the slag off of it grind it down all nicelike and painter black.

Garland Steel...the "Sears Tool Center" of steel yards. If they ain't got it (or can't get it), you don't need it.
