Underhood fire

Major setback today. Been having some fuel delivery issues and and was adjusting the rear float on the carb today. Made some adjustments and was about to button it up. Apparently more gas than I thought came out of the float sight. Rocked the truck to see where I was on the sight and, as far as I can tell, some gas splashed onto the hot header. Next thing I know, the whole back side of the engine is on fire. I closed the hood while I tried to find a fire extinguisher (I didn't see the one in plain sight ). I got it put out and I'm ok.

Damage to motor: distributer melted, plug wires melted, carb is scorched, a bunch of wiring melted.
Damage to paint: hood paint is shot, cowl is scorched, and of all things the firewall is scorched.

No pics today...didn't have the camera with me. Will put some up tomorrow. Still kinda in shock...have to figure out what to do first...

I feel for ya man. The PIG flamed up on the trails in Hot Springs and the fire extinguisher I had didn't work. I got it out before anything major burned up thanks to Larry. The next weekend I pulled my carb off and went to propane. It's worked great since but mine is a trail only rig.

sorry to hear it, bro...my Rubicon had an engine fire a few months back,
the power steering pump blew of the cap and fluid rained onto the exhaust....

viola' flames galore

fortunately, a bystander had an extinguisher .......emptied all 12 lbs of it under
my hood.....saved the motor and the Jeep, but the powder from the extinguisher seemed to do more damage than the flames.....kind of a catch 22..

anyhow, I feel your anguish.....glad to hear you are okay, though

Thanks everyone. Finally settling down a bit and was checking my insurance coverage. Found this in the "exclusions section":
We will not cover: .....

2.
Loss or damage caused by any
repairing, renovating or refinishing
process unless the process results in a
fire or explosion. We will pay only for
damage caused by the fire or explosion.

Sounds a little promising...

This is painful. Looks worse in person than it does in the pics.

Underside of hood should be bright silver. You can see in the middle where I tried to wipe it.

UPDATE 2/28/09: Good news. Insurance covered just about all of the damage. HUGE thanks to everyone who offered support and help

So, I've spent the past couple of weeks assessing the damage on my own to decide what direction to take with the truck. I basically had to tear down the whole front end of the truck to get the body work done. So....with that in mind, I decided it was time for a major upgrade on the engine

Here's how the truck sits as of this afternoon

And here's the new secret weapon

More to come...

Ranger Collision and Custom...formerly Scott's Collision. Scott moved the business from Speedway to just outside Bandera, TX and renamed it in the process. Not redoing the graphics on the hood...just gonna be solid silver on the hood. Never liked the graphics on the hood anyway

Looks to me like the truck was showing you where to put the hole in the hood for the supercharger.

Sort of...got the truck and the hood back from paint. Scott did a great job.

No more silly graphics, or big burn spot on the hood.

Figured I might as well put a new adjustable timing chain to really dial in the cam. Pulled of the cam sprocket and found this:

Whoever built the engine, neglected to put the friction plate and thrust washer on behind the cam sprocket. The sprocket has chewed into the block over 1/8". And because the cam wasn't in snug, the lifters are unevenly worn and a couple of cam lobes in the rear are flattening. Additionally, several of my pushrods are flexing. As if it couldn't get much worse, the pre-screen on the oil pickup was almost completely clogged with purple paint flakes. They got really sloppy when spraying the purple. Nothing was taped off...there's purple on the crank, the timing chain, inside the heads....

What does all this really mean? I need to rebuild the engine and get the block machined to fix the damage. Not something I had wanted to do right now, and definaltely something that was not budgeted for this year. So, the build is dead in the water until I can save up some coin to build the engine that I really want...
