xj questions

alright i got 2 questions. i picked up this xj (its a 84 with a v6...not the straight 6) for 200 bucks, motor runs fine t-case is good. hell even the windows work (even though it doesn't have a front windshield). i do however have to change out the tranny and was wondering if it has to be that exact one or if a tranny from a staight 6 will bolt up to my current motor and t-case. other question is how much stability will i lose if i take the fenders off completely. on my other xj i just had them really hacked up, would i be better off to cut them like my last one or should i just take them off? i'll include pics of both rigs so yall can see what i'm talking about.
thanks for the help

the v-6 is a chevy 2.8 which is a 60* chevy engine. the straight 6 is an amc engine. the tranny's will not interchange. at least i don't THINK so.

Try finding a mid sized chevy car of the same year + or -. Chevy like all manufacturers like to use the same motor in mutilple models.

Best bet is to go to a junk yard and get the I6 and trany in one shot and swap it in.

but if i found one out of a car my t-case wouldn't bolt up. and i still got a good motor and t-case so i'd rather just buy another tranny other than replacing a motor/tranny/t-case when most of my stuff is still good.

you have the Torqueflight 904 - 3 speed automatic - used 84-86 with 2.8L V6 and 2.5L I4 engines. The TF904 was used in CJs from 1980-1986 only with the I4 engine. From 1980-1983, the 904 had a Chevy engine pattern for the "Iron Duke" 2.5L. From 1984-1986 the 904 had an AMC pattern for the AMC 2.5L. The 904 was also used from 1984-1986 in XJs and MJs with the 2.5L and 2.8L engine. I'm not sure when they started using the 909 with the lock-up torque converter.

IIRC, the S-10 pickups had the same engine.
