Proposed Motorized Boat Ban in the Upper Laguna Madre.

I know this does not effect the majority of folks on this site, but I also know there are quite a few people, locally as well as statewide, who enjoy fishing the Upper Laguna Madre. Regardless of whether you have a dog in this fight or not, as members of the off road lifestyle, which is continually being run off and denied access to places we can enjoy our hobby, I think there are more than a few parallels that can be drawn here.

I've grown up fishing in South Texas. As with most anglers on the gulf coast, in the beginning it was in the surf, wading the flats and from piers then as opportunities increased, it was from kayaks and boats. While I enjoy kayak fishing much more than I do fishing from a motor boat, I feel the veiled agenda behind Texas Wade Paddle & Poles' latest push is going too far.

No one is debating the importance the shallow water seagrass meadows. I think an overwhelming majority of the population understand its importance. It's just a handful of self important asshats in boats have created an uproar by being discourteous and at times outright dangerous to other anglers and as well as the environment.

Please look into this and draw your own conclusion. But I think we've all seen this enough times that we can recognize when a group asks for an inch and takes the whole yard.

Re: Proposed Motorized Boat Ban in the Upper Laguna Madre.

Chris, from what I have read, this will not be a motorized boat ban. It will be a sea grass protection area, but will not be a no motor zone.(similar to redfish bay.)
Either way, I think its BS, and I have voiced my opinion on that more than a few times.

Yeah I know what it's "supposed" to be. My understanding, however, is a lot more to their intent and this is just the first step.

I realize the title is stating my personal belief about it and I meant to change it before posting but forgot. If a moderator can change it great. If not, I guess I'll take flack for it.

Re: Proposed Motorized Boat Ban in the Upper Laguna Madre.

Yeah, its all BS IMO.. They did a no motor zone in the 9 mile hole, for 3-4 years.. it was useless, never enforced or anything. They did not renew it, but left all the no motor signs there as a deterrant. Needless to say, they accomplished nothing when it was a no motor zone, and all the signs are gone, back to business as usual now. The whole preservation of seagrass is a joke anyways, hell the scars they try to show are in their ads aren't even from Texas, they are from Florida which has hardly any grass. They have gone way overboard with this crap now, hell in order to modify anything on our cabin (we are over water completly) we have to submit paperwork with propsed plans to the GLO, they do a study and determine if we will be allowed to do our work. All of that is because we are shading the seagrass... Its a damn joke....

Yeah even by the State's own admission, the grass scars heal quicker than they thought prior to the studies.

Either way more restrictions and barriers is never a good thing.
