Red tide down at pins

Just FYI guys red tide rolled in 10-7-11, moving south from mile marker 30 right now.

Yes, bigevil is correct, red tide is a toxic algy bloom that kills fish and if its bad enough plays hell on your eyes and lungs.

it started down south, mansfield area and below.. it is now present as far north as the 15 mm on PINS. With the wind we have had, it will continue to move north. Add that to the fact the the tides are HIGH HIGH HIGH right now, I would not waste a 3 hour drive to fight it.. Red tide is not good stuff to mess with, and can really do a number to ya.

Not Good,,, Hopefully it will get Better...
-------------------------------------------------------------------
From Ranger Buzz

Hi Tyler,

I just spoke with Adam Reimer in the Resource Management Division. He drove to Mansfield Channel today and said that the red tide is highly visible in the water offshore all the way down. The fish kill has worsened since they last drove it on Friday, October 7. He said a rough estimate of the dead fish is currently about 3 to 5 fish per meter. His estimate is that the majority (80%) were skipjacks and most of the rest were mullet and hardheads but a variety of other species are turning up as well.

The kill increases, not surprisingly, as you go through Big Shell. The worst thing he saw was an area from the 34 to the 37 where he counted a couple of hundred red snapper washed in.

I wish we had better news. Thanks for helping get the word out. As soon as we see noticeable changes (for better or worse) I'll pass them along to you.

from another forum
Nick from Breakaway USA.com

He said no red tide or dead fish visible for 4 or 5 miles then some dead fish before you get to the seashore. No aerosol felt and birds working anchovies in the surf. Water clarity very fishable he said.

Re: Red tide down a pinns!!

Drove out to mustang island this past Tuesday, and there were deadfish everywhere. Didn't see anyone fishing out there.

from another forum ????

Beach area around BHP looked great this morning. No aerosals, no dead fish, no visible signs of red tide. Driving was excellent and water clarity good. Wind still out of the north at 15-17mph
