Sea fishing questions!! !
I have been a fresh water fisher all of my life. I now live in Houston and I want to check out some sea fishing!
Specifically I would like to try my hands at crabs and lobster if it's possible to do it off the beach or coast. Also what are your common fishes near the beach/coast? Do I need to buy bigger reels then a 33 combo type? What is your typical bait? Shrimps, worms, etc? Where are some good spots to go? Is there anything I need to watch for when it comes to the law? I mean certain area can't be fished at or such things? Plus what the size of the fish for legal size? Needless to say, anything you can point out that is about sea fishing then it would be helpful to me! LOL Oh, I don't mind getting wet either so that's a no big deal! Also the places to go fishing has to be places where I can drive a stock 2wd truck to, as I know for a fact, my truck hate sand! LOL

we usually go to the south jetties, parts of west bay or Texas city dike area. Depends on the wind direction. Usually take the boat out.
link for some rules and regs... http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publicat...its_saltwater/ http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publicat...legal_devices/ usually people don't call it sea fishing.., many people use the term going to the "coast" but you might be on to something ![]() almost forgot this guy has useful info as well. and updates a week at a time.. http://www.galvestonbayfishing.com/report.htm Last edited by burb89; 01-23-2009 at 09:03 PM.. |

I usually go to matagorda bay about twice a year to go "surf fishing". Basically we drive down the beach and set up camp and throw out some 10-12ft surf rods. I use a $50 combo from academy, nothing too fancy, 30-40lb test.
As far as the fish you can catch- It can be anything, usually redfish, gaftop catfish, sand sharks, sting rays, sand trout, etc. I'll use shrimp, squid, mullet, crab, or even little sting rays. I've seen people catch crabs with a baited trap out in the water before too. The laws and fishing regulations can be found in any place you would buy a fishing license. Just grab one of the little hunting/fishing guide books with your license. And if you drive on the beach you need a $6 beach permit. Your 2wd truck can make it a good ways down the beach if you know how to drive and don't get too crazy. I drive my truck in 2wd about 12-13 miles down the beach no problem 95% of the time.

Well, I've pulled out yotas that were seriously stuck 5ft from the asphalt, and I've seen mustangs about 5 miles out driving like it was stolen. So it's really all dependant of how you drive.

Funny i come back to this thread and read this.
I went fishing today and decided to go near Christmas Bay by the toll Bridge. Well I see all of these tire tracks and I'm like that's must be where the little cars are driving on. I get to going out there and the next thing I know the tire track reduce in numbers and the sand gets softer. I kept going cause I couldn't stop cause I would for sure get stuck. I was almost to a hard spot when I went over this hill and it was just too soft. Luckly this jeep was near by and he pulled me out for some gas money. I turned around and he goes, think you can get out?? I was like watch me, and away I went! LOL I made it back to the hard spots and was able to get on the road. Next time i will air down and watch for that hard packed road that was at the end of the track of tires that I missed, according to the guy.

Go to the WEST side of the bridge, then go in across from the old hotel pilings. It MAY be marked as "no trespassing" now, and if so....... they mean it!! Great fishing though!! Last edited by DZap; 04-17-2009 at 02:30 PM.. Reason: just 'cause |
