At what age do I need to purchase a fishing license?

When you turn 17, you must have a fishing license in order to fish legally in public waters.

For someone who lives in Texas sure don't know much about your own laws.....

Well then please forward that link to the game wardens and park service douche's that work down here. (Even thou Val Verde county is run just like mexico so I doubt it will do any good.)

Even growing up I had to have a fishing license or get fined by the tools.

IIRC, its only when you are under a certain age and fishing by yourself. If you're with a parent, then their license covers it. Same for hunting.

Resident Fishing Licenses

Required of any resident who fishes in the public waters of Texas.
You do not need a fishing license/package if you:
  • are under 17 years of age.
  • were born before Sept. 1, 1930.
  • are a mentally disabled person who is engaging in recreational fishing as part of a medically approved therapy, and who is fishing under the immediate supervision of personnel approved or emplyed by a hospital, residence, or school for mentally disabled persons. The mentally disabled person must carry an authorization identifying the entity supplying the service. This authorization may be in the form of an I.D. card that contains the name of the sponsoring entity.
  • are a mentally retarded person who is recreational fishing under the direct supervision of a licensed angler who is a family member or who is a licensed angler that has permission from the family to take the mentally retarded person fishing. While fishing, the mentally retarded person needs a note from a doctor stating the person has been diagnosed as mentally retarded.
A resident fishing license is included in all Super Combination and Combination packages (including Texas Resident Active Duty Military), the Lifetime Resident Combination and Lifetime Resident Fishing licenses, and the various resident fishing packages offered by the Department. A resident who holds one of these licenses/packages is not required to purchase a separate resident fishing license.

At one time Texas had a plan to regulate fishing and hunting better. At this time, everyone fishing was required to have a license. Age or infliction did not matter, However, childrens, seniors and disabled were free. They wanted to be able to get a good number of was fishing in Tx. This only lasted for a few years and was changed. I think it became too costly.

I fished all over this state as a minor and only needed a license for 3 years of that.
