duplicolor paint job... in garage

not sure where to put this, so mods feel free to move. well my buddy at work wanted to paint his bike and since i took a couple years of auto body in high school I told him i would help him. reason im posting on here is because we used the duplicolor pre mixed laquer you can buy at almost any auto parts store for $20 a quart and was super easy to apply. came out awesome and thought people may be interested in feedback on it to paint their rigs...

Details.

So what all is involved as far as getting the paint ready to shoot in the gun? Do you use it straight out of the can or do you add reducer and hardner?

Looks really nice in the pics!!! Great JOB!!

is it single staged or is that shot with clear as well?

in description it says premixed laquer whick requires no clear but can be reduced with thinner. premix should be ready to shoot after mixing and stirring in can. sprayed it may years ago and is forgiving but fades fairly fast in sunlight was weak point , but sand and polish . looks like new .bj can correct me if wrong on premix .

each stage is pre mixed so you just pour into the gun and spray, but their are three stages: primer, color, and clear. we took the time to sand it with 2000 between every coat to get all the orange peel and debre(sp) out. for some reason no matter what we tried their was a little orange peel but it always came out with a little wet sand. you can see it on the tank if you look close but the can says to wait 6 hours after final coat to sand and buff. it should be buffed and on his bike by tomm. so he can go to the blessing of the bikes.

Wow, I'll have to find a different route then or medium. I want something a little better then a rattle can....but don't want to wait 2 or more weeks.
Light sanding, tape and shot. It's no show stopper and I'm not fixing anymore body damage.
I can't wait to see how it looks over all on his bike.

not sure, wouldnt think it would work. rattle cans normally have to small of a spray pattern and make "lines" when you paint.

Paint job looks very good on the bike. That is the same stuff I used to paint my junk buggy. I've got more in primer, sand paper, and tape than I do in the paint it's self.

The clear coat doesn't shine as much as the good stuff but for what it cost I will continue to use it.

I had an old Suburban that was painted with old school Lacquer. I loved it. It would fade from time to time and with a little elbow grease it would shine right back up to new. I have not tried the new stuff but have thought about it on the Jeep when it is done.

rattle can

If you have smaller areas to paint and want the ease of rattle cans rustolem has one called automotive, I have only found it at lowes. It lays down very nice, has a fan tip, and an excellent shine with very little orange peal. It only comes in 4 or 5 basic colors. I believe it is lacquer also.

i used the red on my ford ranger. was really orange peeled but im no painter. sanded it out and looked good. had real bad luck with the clear coat so i shot it with jet set clear coat, cost $100 gallon, and it really shined. its a better clear coat and last pretty good.

edit: total job was right at $200.
