Half Doors

I've been thinkin' of making half doors for my Ranger. It is my daily driver, so i want to be able to swap them back our for my full doors whenever I need to. With the doors cut like they would be, how would I make them openable, or more importantly, removeable?

I tried to search, but I'm on REALLY slow dialup, which made it hard.

Thanks,
-Brandon

Relocate the interior handle. Dont mess with the outside handle. If you need pics, I'll try to get some. Granted, mine is a chebby, but I dont know why it wopuldn't work on a Ranger too.

No Ford here...but here is a few pics of mine.

Keeping the window frame to me make it look more better...I feel it makes it alittle stronger that ...it won't flex to much...plus, if it rains you can place a trash bag (clear)over the frame to keep some water out.
Also, in the second pic. I didn't inclose all of it...just incase I needed to go back in to fix something. I small door panel will cover that up.

ON the driverside door. I left a section where the side mirror goes to keep it street legal. Not 100% sure I think you can do away with the passanger side if you have your windshield rear-veiw mirror still in place.
here they are complete ready to install.

I modified my door hinges to quickly remove the stock doors and put in the others. I can change out one door in under a Minute. Sorry, I dont have pics of how I did that.
and in action.... it seems I am doing alot more this(looking out the side)

I hope my pics gets you going in the right direction. I did use 1" square tubing to make the frame on the inside. Because, I did it that way. I couldn't put in a drink/cup holder.
Weld on
Mike

Edit: Materials used. Old shelving I got from work for caping the top of the door. 1" square tubing that I also got from work...was some sign holder.
equipment: cut off wheel. Grinder, Marker, tape measure, Sawzall, 110V Gasless Mig (harber fright).
Time: The weekend (I'm sure you can do it in a day but why)

Im an inspector in Corpus. In Texas you only need one mirror. Either one exterior or one interior rear view mirror on a truck or jeep.

The only time that this doesnt apply is if you have limo tint on the rear window, that is hard to see out of, then you need one outside mirror, but the law prefers two, but doesnt require them.

Good info Paul. I run my '74 with no doors and it's going for inspection soon. Nice to know. For easy door removal, Latch Pins. Mine are 3/8"x4". Bought at Fastenal. Not sure how Furds are but I just removed stock pins and replaced with removable latch pins.

i know that you only need one mirror but i am not sure what the law is about no doors. i was an inspector and i think i will depend on the peson doing the test. i would pass it but i know some people are yery picky about inspections.

The thing on doors varies depending upon inspector. A lot of the stuff in an inspection is up to the discretion of the inspector, meaning that if the guy is cool you wont have any problems, but if you piss him off, you are gonna get failed. The deal with doors is actually pretty lax. The law doesnt state that you have to have doors at all. In fact the DPS guys that gave our class actually asked that question to us. I know that in some states you cant remove the doors unless there is a 4" door sill to keep the fet in in the event of a roll over or hard hit from the side.

The law also says that you dont have to have a windshield, but you have to have wipers, and you have to have a place to put the registration and inspection stickers. Thats how sand rails get away with no windshields.

well, I haven't made half doors yet, but when I do make some, I'm goin' to buy some extra doors from the junkyard for them. Heater doesn't work too well without doors. :-P
