Thanks for the info on can-back.
Those are nice, but if I have to spend $1500 or even close to that, I think I'll stick with the hard top....
I'm sure it's probably a good deal for it, but that's a little much for my wallet...
Thanks, though.

That would be nice...
I was just trying to see if they were even still available and see about how much they were going for.
I would love to have one, just cause it's not exactly easy for me(where I live) to get a hardtop on and off my Blazer. I'm sure some of you know exactly what I'm sayin....

That would be interesting. I wouldn't think I would have a problem in the stitching dept. My problem would most likely come in the fastener dept.
Their are many ways to mount a canvass top. And if the the customer would truly want a water tight seal.
That I am sure I can not promise.
My thoughts/ ideas was along the lines of a bikini top. Not a full top.
We shall see.
Now that I have my tube bender here at home. Most likely the top is coming off. Just not to sure how much to cut off. I was thinking along the lines of one huge sun roof. fab up a top for that. Man, I have so many ideas.
For now being that I have a regular machine. I am thinking spider wire (that stuff is strong) for thread and medium canvass in black if I can find any around here. Fasteners would be button type. or maybe 1/4- 1/2 " grommets
I think the jeep guy have a steel flat rod up front to secure the front and Velcro or straps to tighten them down on the sides...and out back.

sounds lame but I need to hem up some pants now. I can never seem to find pant in my size.
But I will be looking.

I have 1 3/4" die so that will be what I am working with.
Mike

But for support on a canvass top. I would like to use some steel rods. Kind of like the old school head liners. That will require some welding on a cage. for some tabs that the rods will mount to.
Anyway, just Ideas. I work on my own. If some one likes and it is doable for myself and that person. Cool. I'm sure we can work something out.
Getting started is the hard part. Large investment for machine and supplies.
Then the need for supply and demand will kick in. Then the way the economy is right now. I'm sure I will not leave my day job.

Don't cheap out on thread, your investment in your machine will turn to crap real quick...

Like everything else, there's specific sizes, weights, and strengths that each machine can handle. Putting something like spider wire through one can kill the motors, tensioners, bobbins/cases, etc. Plus, if you've ever left any kind of fishing line exposed to the sun for a long time you'll notice it gets brittle and breaks a lot easier.

When I got my setup, it came with a huge assortment of different spools of thread. One of those is clear and intended for things like patio furniture. It holds up pretty good, but is a whole lot more visible than you'd think. Being shiny against a matte surface really makes it stand out.

Like welding, you want to use a similar "filler" for the metal being used. Fabrics are the same way--a plastic thread in a cotton canvas (using your example) will abrade against the fabric and eventually cut it. I used a cotton thread on vinyl for my boat seats, and the cotton cut through the vinyl and only stopped because of the cotton backing. Nothing would have sucked worse on that project than having to do it again...lessons learned the hard way I guess.

A good design and the right construction can be done to keep a top pretty water tight. Flaps that extend down past connection points, using welting channel, and good stainless snaps are some ideas. Some of the newer tonneau bedcovers even use long strips of magnets sewn into the fabric. Spray on treatments like Scotchguard and Camp-Dry go a long way to keeping the water from pooling and seeping in as well.

I hear what you are saying. The spider wire is are was something to use for now. Being that I don't have a HD machine.
You do hit a lot of key points.
I was just making dew with what I have.

Hehee...I hear that.

Not to mention, spider wire's for fishin'. Be a darn shame to miss dinner because you can't get the string outta your top .

True that..but it's a lot stronger then thread of the same diameter.
