puttin on a roofrack... thru body mounts?

I actually made it outside today and started work on my roof rack. Only problem is, my truck didn't come with one from the factory so I have no bosses welded into the roof.

so what's the best way to mount objects in this situation? I've thought about punching holes through the roof and welding nuts onto a backer under the headliner. I figure fully loaded it could be quite heavy and I by no means want this coming off at 75mph down the highway.

I'm also worried about rust issues in the future by doing this. I've read to paint and silicone, which is easy enough. Any other tricks? I'm also figuring a good platform for my satellites and cb mounts, so there will be wiring through the rack into the roof as well.

When I worked for GM we had rubber inserts that were threaded. Drilled through the outer skin and used the insert to attach the roofrack

was it basically like a wall anchor? the rubber just slipped in the hole and then expanded when tightened? something like that might work... I had planned on putting large neoprene washers on it anyhow...

I got some at a company that has been doing camper shells for years hear in San Antonio named Uresti. We pulled a roof rack off a POS Exploder that was going to auction to put on another POS Exploder I was going to have to drive for work. I don't know what those inserts are called but onward with your quest.

Alrighty then... I shall seek out these inserts of unknown heritage and conquer them!

Got sidelined today with a blown power steering hose... but what a great day it was to wrench...

yummay... more hardware to tinker with...

so what would be the best for corrosion? could you use the stainless up against the regular steel without rust? or ya think there'd be a need for sealer of some sort?

Seal. If you expose, you rust.
