New crawler starting with 94 XJ

Hello all,
I am pretty new to wheeling, although this year I have made it to Del Rio, Gilmer and to 360 in Arlington.
I have a red '94 XJ on mud 32"s, 3" lift (A/C and a stereo I can hear (for NOW)). Not sure what it is but A/C is ridculed and envied,,,I'll keep it as long as I can, this is TEXAS.
I have met several on this board at the events so far and generally would like to say THANKS for the hospitality and help.
Anyway, I am gearing up for some significant mods to the XJ. I got a set of built and locked Dana 44s, planning the Rubicon 5 1/2 lift and a ?300 transfer case (have to reverse the drop).

Anyone who has built an XJ, I sure would like some tips/ advise/ pictures.

Hey Jeff, I too am not a Jeep guy, what options does he have for pass drop t-case's? It has an automatic, and the front 44 is a pass drop. The only reason I ask is, knowledge is power.(basically, I'm clueless on jeeps)

why 300 xfer?

I really don't know why a dana 300 xfer, it was recomended and I don't know much, so I will go with that till another idea looks better. I have to do something to reverse the drop of the stock XJ to the dana 44 I got ahold of, oppisite drop.
hey, I am in learning mode, i just needed a hobbie to get away from the grandkids that keep miltipling (and seem to live at my house).

A Dana 300 is an excellent choice. but for the XJ you will need to get a flip kit for the drivers drop front axle. (Dana 300 is a pass drop) Down East Offroad makes a good kit $500 range. you can also twin stick the Dana 300 easy plus there is a 4-1 kit available for them. The Dana 300 is known for it's durability

Midnight, That climb you pulled me up on 360, made it today, 3 people in the XJ AC on and found several harder climbs i made to boot. Sure was thinking about you when I walked up that one.
You need to get back up here again. Best to all.

I would have liked to have been there to see you climb that hill. Great job!!! Maybe after Lynne's upgrade we can make it back up there. Any pics of climb?

Dana 30 and corp 8 1/4 or Dana 44's locked

Have pics, and need to develop. Also need to figure out how to post 'em on here. Need to become a contributing memeber but first i am getting undercarrage lights mounted today.

Have no intention of chopping the top. I really like having a parts carrier for the group and AC for when it's hot. Of course it's not a trailer rig YET.

We are trying to get the unimogs under Chris's jeep, then we will work on mine. RE 5 1/2 long arm lift and go to 35" BFG.

Here is a question:
I have a set of built D-44's to replace my stock open axels. Stock axels turn real nice. What is the upgrade to the 44's really going to get me. I think Lynn had the 30/ 35 with lockers and ran strong x-cept for broken axels.

Correct, but when we geared her down to 456's that made a world of difference. Her weakest point was still her axles, mainly here front ones. The D44's will make a great upgrade for your rig and you shouldn't have much axle breakage. Tell Chris to post up some pics of his unimog's. We will be leaving for Arizona this Friday and will post some pics when we get back. Good luck with your upgrades.

Well, Grumpy. It's like this. I have been where you are. I started with 97 TJ. I am running a SBC350/TH350 combo with 1 ton axles with the NP231 transfer case. The T/C has a new 23 spline input shaft and a Slip yoke eliminator kit and I have been running it like that for a couple of years now. I haven't broke it yet. I'm running 38.5" boggers and getting ready to go to 42" TSL's. I had a passenger side differential. I cut the axle tubes and swapped sides and made a driver side differential out of it. Easier than swapping sides with the transfercase.
Just my opinion.
Later.
