New to TX

Just moved to San Antonio the end of July from South Carolina. So I'm new to the area but definitely not new to wheeling. My offroad/jeep addiction started when I moved to Colorado in 2001 and bought my first TJ. Built the TJ over the first couple of years and wheeled all over Colorado and Moab. Moved to Virginia after that and hit up Crozet when it was still open, but sold the TJ after someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

I currently DD this rescue green 2008 JKU Rubi:

My current crawler started life as a 98 TJ, but about the only thing stock things that remain is part of the frame, part of the tub, and a couple interior parts:

I plan on trying to start hitting the trails later this fall after the dust settles from the move. Looking forward to seeing what all TX and the surrounding areas have to offer, which I'm sure is much better then the mud of SC.

Sweet rig! You would feel right at home at Katempsy Rocks in Mason. It's just up the road from you and a big group of us will be there next weekend.

You would be correct, it's got about 6 psi of boost running through it.

I'll try to throw a tape measure on it tomorrow, but dimensions will be close as pulling the grill skin off with the winch and other front junk to get an exact measurement is a pain.

And for a little teaser, I just picked this up from George yesterday to go under the JKU in the near future. Now to start putting together a full float 9" for the rear, or just go with a sterling or 14 bolt.

What numbers are cast in the housing? I had hands on a true super 60 and that just looks like a standard super duty 60. The super 60 is usually 10 lug and has 1550 axle joints as well as even bigger knuckles.

"Super 60" is a bit of an overused term, but according to yukon/Randy's the super 60 was offered in the F-250/350/450/550 from 2002 to current. While there are differences between the F250/350 version and the F450/550 version, as you have pointed out, the commonalities lie in the larger (10") gear set, larger diameter and wall tubes, and the 35 spline inner and out shafts. The differences are in the 10 lug versions (F450/550) that have the larger inner Cs and knuckles and use the 1550 axle shaft U joints. Supposedly there are some 10 lug versions that can be found with the 1480 u joints that the 8 lug versions.

Differentials: Dana "Super" 60 - 35 Spline - Dana Super 60

Well, I hate to contradict Randy, but from what I have found in Dana BOM's and axles in front of me that information is somewhat wrong if you use the ring gear as a determinant. I spent alot of time researching these when I built mine and got a pretty good handle on what is common and what is not. My brother and I also worked a deal on a pile of these axles and resold them.

99-04 is a crap shoot on 50/60 for the F250, but almost all F350's got standard Dana 60's with standard ring and pinion, 30 spline outers, and standard ujoints. The 50 and 60 are the same from the center out and can only be identified by the casting number 226 or 248 on the housing. It is the ring gear measurement in mm. They all have the large axle tubes.

04-up for all 250-350 usually got the "super 60" designation that is not a super 60 if you use the ring gear determination. They typically have standard ring and pinion and 35 spline outers. From what I have seen everything late 04 up is 35 spline. Tubes are the same as the 99-04 60's but the knuckles are a little larger. They also use the super short stub shaft with larger unit bearings.

The true 10" gear 60's only came in a few trucks, from what I can find, 450-550. They are wider than the standard (non) "super 60's". Everything I have seen and the one we had was a 10 lug. The knuckles are even larger and the joints are massive 1550. I think that there were probably some service trucks or something like that in the 350 variety that got these, but not many. Again the way to tell is to check the casting. Rather than 248 it will be 264 (best I remember, but definately over 248 since that is ring gear size)

I think what you have there will be 04--up, standard 60 ring and pinion with 35 spline throughout. Casting number will tell you for sure.

However, with all that said, I cant seem to find anyone that knows 100% and I may have it wrong...LOL...
