Cool Noob/FNG in Richardson

warning, this could get long and turn into a ramble...

I'm another NOOB. never owned a K5 until now but I've always liked them. I've owned 5 or 6 Chevrolet trucks in the past, various years from '85 to 2000. some were 4WD, some not. Been playing with turbo Buicks (Grand Nationals and T-types) for the last 14 years or so, but I believe I'm ready to move on to a new addiction - wheeling! Honestly, I dont' think I'll ever get the turbo Buicks out of my system completely, but I don't have the time or money to support both habits. I kinda got the bug for wheeling several years ago when I went crawling with a co-worker out at Barnwell in East Texas. The guy is a good friend of mine now and a seriously bad influence! He's a hard-core Jeep guy and keeps building bigger and badder trail rigs. Most of what I know about wheeling I've learned from him so far. It seems to be a very different culture and mindset from the turbo Buick world. I've still got my GN, but I plan to sell it this spring to fund my K5 build.

As for my Blazer, it's an '86 K5 I picked off Craigslist in December of last year. Thought it was a good deal at the time, but it needs more work than I realized back in December. It was used (and licensed) as a "Farm Truck" for the last 12 years so it's had "farm implement" quality maintenance. It has also been abused like 20+ year old piece of farm equipment. The good news is, virtually no rust. It's basically stock except for the trans., springs, and tires. I was told the original 700r4 lost reverse so the previous owner replaced it with a TH350. I plan to go back to a 700 asap. It appears to have lift springs but I'm not sure what brand. As of this post, it's sitting on 33x12.50x15 TSL's.

initial plans:

- either rebuild and tune the original Quadrajet *or* replace it with an Edelbrock (already have the Edelbrock carb. just need to rebuild it and find an intake that will work with it)
- replace worn door hinge pins and weak hinge springs
- install slip-on dash cover <-- done!
- replace fuel pump <-- done!
- repace fenders (already have replacements from salvage yard)
- replace rear bumper (need good used one)
- straighten-out numerous electrical issues.
- replace window seals/weather strips
- fix rear power glass (slow as Christmas!)

later plans:
- replace the existing TH350 with 700R4
- replace worn-out 305 with 350, possibly 383 although I want to look at cost and complexity of converting to LS-based truck engine.
- fuel injection of some kind.
- replace OEM steel wheels with OEM aluminum wheels (already have a line on a set)
- fabricated bumpers, including tire carrier and wench provisions.
- swap-out bias-ply TSL's with more street friendly radial mudders
- make the AC *COLD*
- drive the wee out of it, mostly on the street but with trips to the trails as often as possible (nothing too serious, just rookie stuff for fun with the family)

will post pics asap

Welcome to the site. I too am a drag racer turned wheeler. You get the same rush, but at a turtle pace instead of high speed. I always wanted a turbo car though. Either way, this hobby is not any cheaper than the other.

thanks for the welcomes! and yeah, I've watched my buddy build a couple of rigs already and I've already figured out it's just as expensive. however, 4x4 parts are much easier to find than turbo Buick parts and used 4x4 parts seem to be much more reasonably priced than used turbo Buick parts - I guess it's part of that cultural/mindset difference.

as a side note, I have already stood in the driveway and stared at the GN and the K5 and pondered transplanting the GN drivetrain into the K5! plenty of torque, good mileage, less weight and above all, it would be different!!! but nah, one of the reasons I like the K5 is the simplicity. that's something you *dont* have with a turbo Buick!

looking forward to learning from this board and hopefully meeting up with some other members pretty soon.

Rob
