Job closing and or layoff

this thread will be sticked as we all watch the economy go through it's paces in the next few years. when you hear of layoffs or factories shutting down, post them up in here.

to start - DHL is laying off 9400, closing most of it's north American operations

Circuit city is laying off and closing some stores in the wake of it's bankruptcy filing

My son got laid off in Waco. The plant he was working at closed down leaving just a skeleton crew. ( don't know the name of the co. yet. )

The Circuit City here in Mansfield has only been open about 6 weeks and is closing.

Bell Helicopter laid off a few. Most were middle management. I've only seen a short list of Union workers being laid off.

Flint Hills is closing their Odessa plant in Jan. They make polymers for plastics. I believe the reason given was that it wasnt worth it to spend money on needed upgrades.

I heard GM is planning on filing for bankruptcy but don't know how true that one is. Hopefully Circuit City has some good offers coming up for Christmas time...

It true, they said they have enough operating cash to go until the end of Jan, after that they are done. They are asking for a $50M bail out. Bush has said the $700M is only for the financial market and will not approve the $50M, Obama is pushing to get the $50M. It's expected, by some analysts, that if GM goes under than Chrysler and Ford would be hot on their hills.

I dont know if this fits in with this thread or not. I pretty much got laid off today, We lost our contract to a smaller company over $500 a month I know $500 a month is not a small amount of cash but we are talking a multi-billion Co.

With me they are spending around 600k a yr. so really $500 is not alot. They told me today that we are overall 16% higher than the competion. We submitted a new proposal that meets or beats the price of the competitor . SO they only way that they are cheaper is on the management side which 16%= 500 a month.

Just another way cooperate america is pinching pennies

On the other side the competitor is flying in early next week to interview and offer me a position with them.

AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, a teaching hospital severely damaged by Hurricane Ike, will lay off about 3,800 workers — nearly a third of its work force — because it is running out of money.

The University of Texas Board of Regents said in a news release that the Galveston hospital would have no money to operate in about three months, at its current spending rate.

Ike caused nearly $710 million in losses to the hospital when it struck the Texas coast in September and officials have said insurance covered only about $100 million of that.

Some of UTMB's 85 buildings were inundated by up to 8 feet of water. The hospital's kitchen, blood bank and radiology department were virtually destroyed.

The University of Texas system doesn't have the money to cover the hospital's needs and Federal Emergency Management Agency funds cannot be used for operating expenses, or wages and benefits of staff, officials say.

Ike blasted ashore near Galveston on Sept. 13, flattening buildings and killing at least 37 people in Texas and more than 70 nationally. The monster storm was 600 miles wide when it hit land and is the most expensive in Texas history, an estimated $11.4 billion in damages — so far.

UT officials had not yet identified which employees would be laid off but plan to pay them through January, according to The Galveston County Daily News. UTMB has 12,000 employees.

Dr. Kenneth Shine, interim chancellor of the UT system, was optimistic that most of those laid off from the hospital would find work at other health care institutions.

They just laid off a few new guys at my job a couple weeks ago. This is the first lay-off they've had since 1994. The poor housing market has a big impact on our production.
