Special Weather Statement for Taylor, TX

Issued by The National Weather Service
San Angelo, TX

... LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL POSSIBLE THIS WEEKEND...

A DEEP UPPER LEVEL TROUGH WILL APPROACH WEST CENTRAL TEXAS THIS WEEKEND... RESULTING IN INCREASED RAIN CHANCES. WE ARE LIKELY TO SEE THE MOST WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAIN EVENT IN SEVERAL MONTHS ACROSS THE AREA. SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BEGIN TO INCREASE OVER WEST TEXAS LATE TONIGHT AND EARLY SATURDAY... THEN SPREAD INTO WEST CENTRAL TEXAS THROUGHOUT THE DAY ON SATURDAY. THE BEST CHANCE OF HEAVY RAINFALL IS EXPECTED TO OCCUR SATURDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH SUNDAY.

ALTHOUGH MUCH OF THE AREA CONTINUES TO SUFFER FROM EXTREME TO EXCEPTIONAL DROUGHT CONDITIONS... A PROLONGED PERIOD OF HEAVY RAINFALL IS EXPECTED ACROSS PORTIONS OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS THIS WEEKEND. THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL IS EXPECTED TO OCCUR WEST OF A SAN ANGELO TO ABILENE TO THROCKMORTON LINE... WHERE TOTAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS BETWEEN 4 AND 6 INCHES ARE LIKELY... WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE. ELSEWHERE... RAINFALL AMOUNTS BETWEEN 1 AND 3 INCHES ARE EXPECTED. THE HEAVY RAINFALL WILL RESULT IN THE POTENTIAL FOR LOCALIZED FLOODING OF URBAN AND LOW LYING AREAS... AND ALONG CREEKS AND STREAMS.

RESIDENTS ARE URGED TO MONITOR FUTURE FORECASTS AND STATEMENTS FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AS THIS HEAVY RAINFALL EVENT BEGINS TO UNFOLD.

Flood Advisory for Taylor County, TX

until 3:45 PM CDT, Sat., Oct 08, 2011

Issued by The National Weather Service
San Angelo, TX

Sat, Oct 8, 2011, 1:57 PM CDT

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SAN ANGELO HAS ISSUED AN
* URBAN AND SMALL STREAM FLOOD ADVISORY FOR... NORTHEASTERN TAYLOR COUNTY IN WEST CENTRAL TEXAS... THIS INCLUDES THE CITY OF ABILENE...

* UNTIL 345 PM CDT

* AT 152 PM CDT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RADAR DETECTED AN AREA OF HEAVY SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS EXTENDING FROM JUST NORTH OF ABILENE... SOUTH TO NEAR BALLINGER IN RUNNELS COUNTY. TRAINING OF THIS ACTIVITY WILL RESULT IN HEAVY RAINFALL ACROSS THE ABILENE METRO AREA. HOURLY RAINFALL AMOUNTS BETWEEN 1 AND 1.5 INCHES CAN BE EXPECTED... RESULTING IN URBAN AND SMALL STREAM FLOODING.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

EXCESSIVE RUNOFF FROM HEAVY RAINFALL WILL CAUSE ELEVATED LEVELS ON SMALL CREEKS AND STREAMS... AND PONDING OF WATER IN URBAN AREAS... HIGHWAYS... STREETS AND UNDERPASSES AS WELL AS OTHER POOR DRAINAGE AREAS AND LOW LYING SPOTS.

IN HILLY TERRAIN THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF LOW WATER CROSSINGS WHICH ARE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS IN HEAVY RAIN. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL ACROSS FLOODED ROADS. FIND ALTERNATE ROUTES. IT TAKES ONLY A FEW INCHES OF SWIFTLY FLOWING WATER TO CARRY VEHICLES AWAY.
