carports outta oilfield pipe?

down at our old lake cabin the old man that took care of the place used oilfield pipe to make covered storage for all the trailers...

well, I don't see why I can't do the same here in my backyard to give me a little more protection to work and get away from the spying eyes of the neighbors...

what's a good source and a good price for used pipe? what all does it take to weld that stuff? cleaning, grinding, rods etc?

Drill pipe is going for a premium right now. Good luck finding 2 7/8" anywhere. 2 3/8 is still available though in some places. Nothing special about it.....always used 7018's to weld it with. I got a buddy over here that has some 2 3/8 for sale....I think he still has it. 2 7/8" will bring nearly $2 bucks a foot. I remember back 3-4 years ago I could buy it all day long for around $ .92 a foot!

Best place to look would probably be in the Midland/Odessa area. There's a lot more oilfield work down there. Cody might know where you could find some.

You will want old tube not drill pipe.

Sometimes the oil-feild pipe is magnatized, seems to help to reverse polarity while welding it.

so what's the difference btw these two pipe types? the stuff I'm thinking about is pretty heavy, tends to flake off in layers if not painted, and is almost always covered in thick rust.

That is drill stem you are talking about. It all does that. Before you cut it beat the snot out of it witha BFH and it will cut much easier. I have welded the nastiest stuff out there and never had to reverse anything. Just turn the heat up some. Oh and I just saw you were in Lubbock so I can't help you out the pipe. There should be tons of it out there your way. Make a good friend that works in the oil field and tell him to hook you up....that is where I get most of mine. You can also call steel yards and get reject stem....it is unused and works great for what you want it for.
