Rockwell Newbie...Locker or Spool?

I just purchased a pair of steerable Rockwells and I am looking at Ouverson's 47 spline stuff. Their price for the ultra locker and their spool is the same. Which would be the prefered method to lock up the front and rear on a front and rear steerable rig? I am concerned about being "pushed" due to the spool and the meer weigh and width of the Rock's alone. What do you guys run, and what would would you guy's run if you could? ARB is out due to wont fit the 2" shafts and it's too new I have had issues with an ARB and doubt I'll ever purchase another. Thanks for any and all info. Great site. Jim

I run a detroit in the front and a weld rear. But your going rear steer that alittle different. I would do the locker front and rear. And you mite think about building your rig little as you can. It can be done with rocks. Im 4300pds.

And as far as shafts go do the OEM 16spl replacement shafts in the front and maybe the 47spl in the rear. The guy's i run with have more problem breaking the rears.

What tires you going to. If its no bigger then 44"s no need for the 47spl's go with the 16spl's. U-joint style stocker are pretty strong.

I'm welded front and rear with 4 wheel steer and I'm going to upgrade to a front locker when I get the time. With a my 205 twin sticked I just leave it in front wheel drive and tap the brakes around the tight corners when we are on the trails.

Detriot front, welded rear with the 16 spline alloys if you plan on running anything over a 44" tire.

I've got stock shafts in my and haven't broke one yet with 44" boggers and I like to stand on the stupid pedal from time to time.

Well I didn't have internet access for several days and while offline I purchased a 47 spline locker from OME. I figure if I change my mind I can make this chunk for the front but I am guessing I will run his lockers front and rear. I will be running 41" IROK's to start as I already have them bought and paid for and I dont see them selling as they cost me $500 each. In the end I am guessing my tire size will depend on what I can get to fit and what looks good for the set up. This will all be going under either a Tin Top Zuk or a 4 door Tracker? I havent decided that part yet...LOL MAN does OME make some awesome ****. I think they will take me broke...LOL Thanks guys for the replys. Jim

I take it you got the 47 spline 2" shafts as well or you just bought yourself a 500 dollar door stop. If you are running the big shafts you should just step up to a 54" boggers. Huge over kill for a 41" Isuk.

I second that. IMO, The 2 inch shafts are somewhat overkill for an Irok. There are some guys in florida that are making chromoly rockwell shafts that will fit your stock carrier for half the price of the 47splines. Good thing you are going rear steer, because on a rear you would have to get the housing machined to fit the 2" shafts.

These things are so freakin massive that I dont want to build it twice. I will be going with the 2" shafts at least in the rear for now and might run the front stock till funds for parts permit getting the front rock stuff. I have found a deal on some 49" IROK's that should be alot of fun in the snow...LOL I have my stock take out u joint axles up for sale if anyone wants spares or to replace the reppeza stlye shafts. Jim

Did you pay $500 each for 41 irocks man thats way high. You need show online and then call 4Wparts. They well meet or beat the price most days. And ship them to your door. I paid $355each for my 42-14-16.5 irocks. but pick them up.

If you dont have the u-joint style axles in the front. Keep your spares. And run the oem axles in the rear that were most guy break axle first.

I have a question to all. I am curious on how bad the front rock will steer when it is welded? I am building a truggy and thinking about welding up both to save cash for now and detroit it later. How bad is it to weld up both axles?

#16 ·
Its not that bad if you got acouple guys or a engine hoist. To pick the third up. Dont jery rig it. Pull the third and then unwire the ring gear and weld the spider gears together. Dont just weld thorw to holes in the side. You mite not get a locker in there after that.

But i would do the front before you install it. Or ya'll never do it. Its a pain to pull your axle out after you set the rig on it. You can get a new detriot for less $400 to you house with shipping and mite find one for less used. OEM stuff is alittle high. Detriots work mine.

Hey start your own post to that way we get more tech. post going.

RANDYS RING AND PINION. About the only place with deals on axles parts. Gears, Lockers and what not.

RamRock, I took a look at randy's again. The cheapest locker I could find is for $430. Have any other places that might have that $300 locker. I've looked at all the popular places like Chucks and Over's. Anywhere else?

From the info that I have gathered although the OEM Ultra locker is like the Detroit it is much better built. I am in the same boat of sorts. With the chunk weighing in at 230 lbs. I want to build this right the first time. I do NOT want to have to take this apart again. Jim

I took mine apart this weekend and welded up the rear. I found it extremely easy. It is heavy as hell but with the hoist if didn't break a sweat. Taking it apart was a breeze!

Ive yet to sell a detroit break. And i wheeled over a dozen guys that hve rockwells under there rigs.

The O.E.M locker lets you pull the side so you can go to the 2"in 47spl shafts.
