Help save moab

The Chairman of the Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands of the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources has scheduled a hearing on October 1 to consider H.R. 1925, America's Red Rock Wilderness Act of 2009. This legislation -- which will ban off-highway vehicle (OHV) access to public lands to those who live and recreate in Utah -- was introduced by New York Representative Maurice Hinchey. To read his press release on H.R. 1925, click here.

However, not a single Representative from Utah is supporting H.R. 1925.

Specifically, H.R. 1925 would designate more than nine million more acres as federally protected "Wilderness," and directly affect the Moab, San Rafael Swell and Chimney Rock areas (to name a few) in Utah. These popular OHV areas represent some of the most important remaining OHV recreation areas in Utah, and are some of the most popular with responsible OHV riders. The proposed Wilderness designation would also make the land off limits to ATV riders, mountain bikers and horseback riders.

Coming on the heels of the recently enacted Omnibus Public Land Management Act, which closed 2 million acres of public lands, this vast Wilderness bill will take away additional recreation opportunities currently enjoyed by local residents and visitors alike.

The AMA needs your help now to stop H.R. 1925. The fastest way to reach your U.S. Representative is to call them. You can find contact information for your elected officials by entering your zip code on AmericanMotorcyclist.com, clicking on "Rights," then "Issues and Legislation." Additionally, a prewritten e-mail is available for you to send to your Representative immediately by following the "Take Action" option and entering your information.

Please contact your Representative right away and urge them to oppose H.R. 1925.

I got this in the mail just now...

Dear Ed:

Thank you for contacting me with your support for H.R. 1925, the America's Red Rock Wilderness Act of 2009. I appreciate the opportunity to address this matter.

As you may know, H.R. 1925 would designate specific areas in Utah as components of the National Wildlife Preservation System (NWPS). President Lyndon Johnson created the NWPS in 1964 in order to "secure for the American people of present and future generations the benefits of an enduring resource of wilderness." This act helps preserve the listed wilderness areas by banning temporary roads, motor vehicles, motorized equipment or motorboats, landing of aircraft, other forms of mechanical transport, and no structures or installations within any protected areas. Currently, this bill has been referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources . Should I be called upon to vote on this matter, I will keep your support in mind.

Again, thank you for contacting me on this matter. If I may be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

John Carter
Member of Congress

Ha ha ha do they realize that if that's passed, Moab will go off the map. The only thing to do there is 4wheel. I bet 90% of the tourism would dry up if they took that away!

True, but people who try to pass things like this dont care about the welfare of people. To them the environment is way more important people's way of life.

Figures... Maurice? Maurice? Maurice who probably never had a day of fun in his life comes up with this piece of trash legislation and wants to control all the people in the States. Again, this is another usurption of the Feds over every day American peoples lives. I say that that all country clubs, golf courses, yacht clubs and water side elitist places should be all banned on account of historical maritime occurrences. We need to preserve the water that once gallant ships sailed on, fought battles, or commenced in commerce that built this great nation.

Every private golf course should be research to see if there was a trail at one time on it. If so, the Federal legislation guarding trail preservation should be enforced and the yippee golf courses closed down. Time to fight fire with fire.

I'm fed up with this crap. Hey Maurice...

That's true. They just did the same thing in Corpus a while back at Packery channel, they tried to close it down and build some private condos or some crap. Luckily enough people voted against it. Now this time I'm sure with all our fellow wheelers we've got the numbers just show me where to sign!
