What is an RSS newsfeed?

Quote:
RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites, including major news sites like Wired, news-oriented community sites like Slashdot, and personal weblogs. But it's not just for news. Pretty much anything that can be broken down into discrete items can be syndicated via RSS: the "recent changes" page of a wiki, a changelog of CVS checkins, even the revision history of a book. Once information about each item is in RSS format, an RSS-aware program can check the feed for changes and react to the changes in an appropriate way.

RSS-aware programs called news aggregators are popular in the weblogging community. Many weblogs make content available in RSS. A news aggregator can help you keep up with all your favorite weblogs by checking their RSS feeds and displaying new items from each of them.

Thumbs up

Kenny,

that link points the 0.91 version feed... most people will want to use the version 2.0 feed located at

http://www.texas4x4.org/external.php?type=rss2

This feed will include previews of the posts, and is more extensible...

http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rss

thanks for doing this BTW... from those of us that use RSS feeds today

Would it lag the site to set the RSS refresh to a shorter time than 1 hour?

I use rssBandit but I like the concept of bloglines since you can access it from any computer. I've also recently found blogbot which is a plug-in for outlook which is great for while you're at work... no one would suspect anything while you are using Outlook to check your "email"...

the xml is quite small compared to the pages that load images such as the actual forum itself. I think it is safe to say that you will not overload the site by refreshing the xml more frequently.

what is not working well exactly? the one thing about google is it only displays the item title. so in that sense its not a true aggregator in that you can't view the items without actually visiting the site. However, Google is good for being able to give you a heads up to site activity as you visit your homepage.

Only settings in google I have found are the ones to set how many subjects you want. I've not had as much time as Micah to play around with it......yet

I see several headings for the same thread. Also, when you set the number (of posts?) does that mean you only get to see that many from the latest post?
