Project 5 tons 'o fun(56k beware)

Well since I cant think of a more snazzy name this is what I am stuck with

This is what I am starting with:

It is a 1974 crew cab 4wd. Its got a 460, t-18, and divorced np205. I picked this truck up towards the end of last summer. I have a obsession with 74's, I dunno why. My first two trucks were both 74 f-100s....but I digress.

This is going to be a mud truck, because I already have something for the rocks(yoter), however I have a set of 53s I might put on from time to time:

I am going to be running 5 ton rockwells unless I find a killer deal on a set of planetaries, and I intend to run a "1-link" like Donuts and a few others. Here are the tires I am gonna run:

I got those from a scrapyard near here for $80, I am pretty happy with my purchase

Those I got from another scrap yard for free. All 4 are off combines(John Deere) and they are 23.1x26 which is about 65" tall.

While I was taking pics I decided to do a "mock up" of the tires next to the truck. It was hard rolling them over there by hand.

I think I might need to trim the fenders a little bit

I plan on running 8" super duty coils front and rear, although that is not set in stone yet. Hopefully all you experts can lend me a helping hand with advice because this is the first truck I have built. Stay tuned for more.

I'LL DOUBLE YOUR MONEY ON THOSE TIRES! Seriously...want to sell them, or can ya get another set. Those are sweet! I think the new sonoma might look good with those! You might think about running a doubler in that rig. That is alot of tire to turn over. A buddy of mine runs some 62's like that and uses a deisel and doubler and it works out pretty sweet. That's going to be one sick ride!

The tractor tires would just be a backup in case there is something the 54's can't handle...lol!

I may be able to find you some more. LOTS of people scrapping stuff right now. I will keep my eyes open next time I go up there. I paid scrap price for the two in the first pic. I am afraid to think about what one of them bastards costs new.

Right now my plans are to swap a c-6 in and another np205. Should be super easy since its already got a divorced 205.

You should just go ahead and sell me that set then you can find some more laying around up there. We don't get that kind of scrap around here. When you want me to come pic them up...lol!

That doubler setup is what alot of people are doing on the mud truck around here. Should work out fine and I don't think length is an issue for your truck...lol! Got a full manual c-6 valve body and nice fairbanks convertor I could throw in on the deal!

They cost a whole he** of alot of $'s new !! That truck is going to be totally sick looking -- I just cant imagine tractor tires -- I see tractors all day where I live and work and those things are HUGE!!!!!

Let me check around and see if any of the farmers have any they need to get rid of for yall. By the way I know ALOT of farmers -- I load 18 wheelers with Ag. Liquid Fertilizer all day !

Make sure you post up progress on this -- it will be interesting !

I took a little off the back this afternoon:

I cut the frame right behind the spring hangers for now. I may cut more after I get the new suspension and whatnot under it. I gotta get my axles. Red river charges $1350 a set for 5 tons so it looks like the local guy will be cheaper.

I am thinking that spinning the tires too fast would be really bad for it. The mud up here can get BAD, worse than the stuff I have rode in east/southeast TX.

Here is one of the holes at the place we usually go to:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfqL6MhFHh4

www.bricks4x4farm.com

the guys from trucks gone wild will be there in June, they will be in for a rude awakening when they hit that hole.

Glad I'm not on 56k, 10 minutes was long enough... IrfanView. Seriously. You need it.

I'd repaint those rims and armor all those tires before some farmer came looking for the guy that put his combine up on cinder blocks . That's a damn good deal, and no way would it end up going to scrap around here. Even the nearly bald, well used stuff gets traded in on the replacements...

You must have the ghetto high speed if it took you 10 minutes.

The combines were scrapped. The more I look at the two tires without centers the more I wanna find two more. They are pretty rough.

Donuts, That one has your name all over it. Looks like a easy grand for your rig.

Is that the S10 that was in TTC last year open front and back with GMC 2 1/2 tons?

Keep the pics rolling on your monster of a rig your building.

one in the same. I dont know wtf is up with people around here. They spend all this time building trucks then get lazy with stuff like lockers and even steering.

One guy that comes out to bricks made a real nice lookin truck on tractor tires, but had some kind of abomination of a stock steering system.

If you look on their website there is lots of pics of big trucks stuck like hell in that hole.

Not only ghetto, two types of ghetto. I switch between DSL and Wireless at different points during the day. 1.5meg is about as good as it gets, and that's early morning. Between the two I'm out close to $60/mo and I can't depend on either of them .
