Thats an early CJ5, could be in the range from about 1955-71. What motor does it have? Stock should be an F-head 4 cylinder or Buick 225 V6...or a swap?

Good eye Laramie,
CJ5's were made from 1954-1983. Thats an earlier model with the cut-out in the hood. I bet it had the 225 in it, or it could have had a 232 I6.

That tail gate I bet was put on at another time. Kaiser and AMC was the only producers of the CJ5 because Willy's sold to Kaiser in 1953.

Easy way to tell the year range is wheelbase. I'm willing to bet it's 71 and older because of the hood cut-out.

81 in (1954-1971)
83.5 in (1972-1983)

Damn that's old! Laramie? Got any suggestions. Did Kaiser keep the Willy's name? My Jeep history book says they sold before CJ5 was produced.

They made the M38A1 for the military a couple years, which the CJ5 was based on. My guess would be that the name change from WO to Kaiser hadn't been finalized when the CJ5 was released for sale and/or they had a bunch of parts sitting around that had already been produced.

Yeah, its a Willys. I think Kaiser took over in the early 60's and started putting jeep on the tailgate. Its pretty close to what an M38A1 is, although it wont have the factory shackle reversal up front like an M38A1 does. Should still have a T-90/ dana 18, with 44 out back and a 25 up front. Although, it could have the uber rare t-98a granny 4 speed tranny, that would make the drivetrain alone worth well over $1000. Jeeps like this should still have a fuel tank mounted under the driver seat, as well as either a toolbox under the passenger seat, or an aux. fuel tank. They are good strong jeep, with most of the steering and frame similarities to a flatty. Clutch and brakes should still push through the floor like a flatty, with the brake master being mounted on the framerail under the floorboard.

1970 was the last year for Kaiser-Willys, the next year they went to AMC after the buyout. Not much help there.

Not that it matters, but '72 was when the AMC jeeps came out..along with the long nose jeeps with straight 6 engines. '71 models look just like the one pictured. They even have a very coveted (in the early jeep world) flanged dana 44 rear axle...which was made from 70.5 - the '71 model year.

I had a M38A1 that looked just like that, I think mine was a 52. I don't remember it having a flip down tailgate just a solid tub. It ran good but had no brakes of any kind. Mine was from Reece Airforce Base in Lubbock. It was airforce blue under the crap red paint job.
