Gas for Welder

I got a new Hobart 140 115v for my birthday and it is gas ready. So it's a no-brainer that I am going to get gas. I laid my first beads over the weekend and had some fun. My first project is a welding cart. Anyway, I want to start with the 72/25 Argon /CO2 gas, but where to get it locally? West side perfable. How much should I get. It'll be used on simple projects like a welding cart, some bumper work etc etc. I saw that I can buy a bottle at Harbor Freight for around $70, but maybe an exchange service would be better for me? What other options are there?

Delimma: I will likely be moving next June, so I don't want to commit to a certain company for service if possible.

Thanks for the help!

J.D.

Do you get your gas at TSC or just the bottle? Thanks!

I had a bottle and exchanged it at TSC. Now I have the TSC brand bottle, but it's not a rental, it's mine.

I get mine at TSC as well. With their deal (and having to buy a tank anyhow) you own the tank--and can take it anywhere to have it filled. I had a hard time getting the same deal out of the LWS--they didn't want to sell bottles that small, and would have to send them off to fill anyway.

TSC works just like picking up gas for your BBQ grill. Take it in, swap it, use the gas, take it back. They do all the painting, maintenance, and testing. Some "owned" bottles you'll end up having to pay for all that yourself--and your bottle may at some day fail certification.

Oh, and the price here is actually cheaper at TSC than the dedicated suppliers

The bad thing about our local Welding shop, is that you have to lease a bottle for 99yrs. in order to get gas from them. I currently have 3 bottles leased from them, but it makes it a PITA to for someone that needs gas every once and a while............

off of culebra and I10. They can sell you a bottle or bring your own. I waited their and they had mine filled 75/25 mix. They also sell all kinds of welding supplies.

Thanks guys, I will do some research on costs and get back to you. For the novice and hobby , how big of a bottle do you recommend?

Don't get the little one. I say a 4' tall or bigger. I ran out of gas in two weekend of using it.
Mike

The small one was around 150 plus 40 to fill. and the larger ones were around 250 and I dont recall their price on filling. Give them a call. I am sure they can help you. It's on the westside of town.

For that class of , you don't need that big of a bottle. Running the 2# spools, you'll likely burn 3-4 before you get close to the end of the bottle. A 10# spool will go about the full cylinder, and since it's just a rough estimate, maybe a lot more. Everyone is different, and every job is different. It's impossible to be exact on usage. Either way, that's really a lot more than you realize--if you're settings are right. If you're just bird sh*tting stuff together and doing lots of passes, you're wasting both wire and gas. The more experienced you are with your machine and setup, the more money you'll save on both down the road.

I run a HH175, 75/25 mix @ 8-14lbs. from a Thoroughbred (TSC vendor) #3 bottle. 32" tall unit. It's more than enough, and I've never run out during a project. Check your gauges, make sure you shut the valve when not welding, and protect your hoses. Plus, the smaller the bottle, the more portable it is. The #3 bottle is too big for me to drag around, so I end up changing over to fluxcore any time I'm not working in my shop.

At the same time, to get the most out of your machine, fluxcore or CO2 will give you better penetration. 75/25 just makes for less grinding/cleaning/spatter.

Be sure you get something that is easily exchangeable/refillable. My dad made the mistake of getting a smaller tank the first time. When it came time to get more gas he couldnt find anyone around here that normally kept that size in stock and would have to send it off to get it refilled and tested.
